Meet Lanita Smith

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lanita Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lanita below.

Hi Lanita , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I would have to say my mom. She was always faced with adversity but all I ever witnessed was her overcoming. She never complained even in the midst of going through yet she still managed to carry herself with grace and had a mindset of a winner.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My brand is Lanita Smith. I am a singer-songwriter. I have never just placed myself in a box a just a writer or artist. I wear many hats. I am an artist, songwriter, producer, and musician. I love being able to adapt to different rooms and situations I am placed in. By being able to do so many things it has always allowed me the chance at more opportunities. Maybe someone doesn’t need a songwriter, but they need a keyboard player. Being able to adapt has opened a lot of doors for me. Being myself in rooms has helped me. I love to tell stories as a writer. As a musician, I love for music to sound timeless. I only strive to be the most authentic version of myself. I still get up everyday and work hard.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say:

Being creative
Being Flexible and Versatile
Being knowledgable and a forever learner at the same time

My advice to others is stay eager to learn and grow. It takes hard work and you have to put the work in. Each day is a new day and new opportunities. Each brick counts to building your house.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I would say, I spent a season having to remember my why. I didn’t forget but I started to lean on others and not notice it and then when I experience let-downs it made me realize the promise I made to myself. I don’t do what I do because I need people but I do it because I love music. It’s a with or without you thing. (No harm intended) I had to be my own cheerleader even if I am the only one in the crowd.
