We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laomo Wang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laomo below.
Hi Laomo , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My personal understanding of “resilience” is the ability to continuously face and deal with problems encountered in life and work.
I try not to force myself to do things when I am not in a good state. For example, I choose to take a break after working for a while, allowing both my body and mind ample time to recover, so that I can face subsequent work and life in a better state.
I usually choose to get a good night’s sleep, exercise, or temporarily detach from the current environment to adjust my state.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an illustrator from China, and my daily work mainly involves collaborating with commercial brands and publishers to create illustrations for them. I enjoy combining Eastern elements with a modern touch, and I am particularly captivated by the soft, fluffy textures and the gentle ambience they create. I hope that my work can convey a sense of storytelling, leaving room for the viewer’s imagination.
(Below is the relevant introduction to the illustration ‘Useless Book,’ with corresponding images added.)
This series of works consists of illustrations created in 2023 for World Book Day, commissioned by Cosmopolitan magazine. The illustrations were made in 2023 using digital tablet drawing. The entire series includes five illustrations. Through depicting different forms of books and various scenarios, the series explores the diverse forms of books and their integration into various contexts to convey the intimate relationship between humans and literature. Reading enriches the spirit, and within the pages of a book, we may discover an improved version of ourselves. Even books that appear to lack immediate “utility” can offer profound benefits once we engage with their content.
It is an honor that this series has received recognition, including the EDITORIAL SILVER MEDAL at the iJungle Illustration Awards 2023, as well as distinctions as both Winner and Runner-up in Creative Quarterly 74. Furthermore, the series was shortlisted for the Communication Arts Illustration competition.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe the three most influential qualities in my profession are: the introspective pursuit of personal preferences, an organized workflow, and the willingness to attempt and embrace change.
Recommendations:
1.Initially, resist the urge to hastily establish your style, as it may impose constraints. Your distinctive style should evolve naturally as an outcome, rather than being a preconceived objective.
2.A organized workflow can decrease the probability of errors, curtail unnecessary consumption, and ensure the ongoing production of work.
3.When faced with new experiences or the acquisition of new skills, avoid making preconceived judgments. Approach these as everyday occurrences, which will make it easier to take the first step.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the past year, I have experienced the most significant enhancement in my collaborative skills and my capacity to handle multiple projects concurrently.
