We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laria Brent a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
LaRia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I started my career in education at the age of 23. I looked about 17, and I was always the youngest or only African American in the room. Even now, over ten years later, I sit in leadership meetings and I’m often the only African American at the strategy table. I don’t approach the room as if I need approval or validation from anyone at the table. I am educated, and skilled in my profession. I put in the work to know my craft. I come to the table not giving myself any doubt or separation that I am in any way less qualified or “lucky” to be present. I share my insights with the same confidence authority and certainty as everyone else. I know I possess the expertise to keep up and often exceed the goals and I do just that. In return, my opinions and insights are taken seriously. In every room I enter, I have done the work to be there and it shows when I speak.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My peers would say I am a Media Mogul who communicates through books, shows, podcasts, and
mentoring. I incorporate my professional experiences, educational background,
and personal values to produce media that is inspiring and entertaining. My life’s mission is to leave a positive impact on the hearts of people.
I recently released my first book titled “Dear Royal: Letters to Your Purpose”. This book was from a mentoring program I founded called Royals Mentoring, which has a mission dedicated to helping youth reach their purpose. The book includes 21 letters that inspire youth and young adults to fulfill their purpose in life. I believe everyone has a purpose they were born to fulfill. There is a journey of personal development we skip in going after our career, which leads us to live false identities. This book takes you through a process to rebirth your true self which will cause you to align with your true purpose.
I also plan to launch a traveling youth conference late spring and summer which will bring this message of purpose to youth and young adults all over the nation. My goal is to speak to the world and push others to live in purpose.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three areas of knowledge that were impactful to me:
1. Know your roots- meaning everything you think or believe about yourself, seek to know and understand where it comes from. Sometimes we do things from the roots of rejection and not desire. Many have goals that may be birthed to prove others wrong. That is the wrong type of fulfillment. Go after goals that make you better and help you achieve purpose.
2. Relentlessly pursue healing- Whether that is therapy, prayer, personal development, tough conversations, or all. You can be greater when you are healed.
3. It’s okay to start over as often as you need. You are starting from experience not from scratch.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am looking for spaces to join that have goals to develop people professionally, personally, or spiritually. I would like to speak to students in high schools and colleges. Also, adults in their career field who need the motivation to continue their purpose or to know what purpose looks like in the future. Conferences and seminars that desire motivational insights or discussion on personal or professional development.
The easiest way to connect with me is through my Linktree page. It is a quick handle that has my social media, websites, book, and contact form. I am very responsive via email and all my social media platforms. So any contact method can be used with a 24-48 hour response time.
