Larry, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
As a music composer and audio artist, It is important to keep creativity alive in our artistic endeavors. It’s a journey that requires conscious effort and a receptive mindset. Based on my personal experience, here are a few strategies that have helped me maintain and nurture my creativity.

Firstly, I find that regular exercise of my creative abilities is crucial. I dedicate specific time each day to delve into new musical ideas, experiment with different genres or techniques, and challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone. This continuous exploration keeps my creativity engaged and allows for the flow of fresh and innovative ideas.

Additionally, taking breaks is vital for my creative process. I’ve learned that pushing through mental fatigue can stifle my inspiration. Stepping away from my work and allowing myself time to rest and recharge provides valuable perspective and renewed energy when I return. During these breaks, I engage in activities that inspire me or simply relax, allowing my mind to wander and make new connections.

Seeking inspiration from other artists has also been instrumental in fueling my creativity. I expose myself to a wide range of musical genres, attend live performances, and explore various art forms. Immersing myself in the work of others stimulates my own imagination, expands my musical palette, and encourages innovative approaches to composition.

Lastly, I emphasize self-care and create a stimulating environment. Taking care of my physical and mental well-being is crucial for sustaining my creativity. I engage in activities like meditation, exercise, or spending time in nature, which help me find balance and maintain a healthy state of mind. Additionally, I design my workspace to inspire me, surrounding myself with visual and auditory stimuli that resonate with my artistic vision.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a music composer and audio designer, dedicated to crafting captivating music pieces and creating immersive sonic branding for a diverse range of media and stories. My work spans personal concept album projects rooted in my own narratives, as well as collaborative ventures with clients and fellow creative minds, all aimed at developing collective stories that transcend individual boundaries. These experiences have shaped and enriched my artistic journey, and I take immense pride in the projects I have accomplished and released.

One notable collaboration was with Beyond Van Gogh’s project, a location-based immersive experience that has been showcased in many major cities worldwide. I had the privilege of creating immersive music and sound experiences for their VR piece as an audio artist. Collaborating with a talented team, I crafted an audio landscape that brought Vincent van Gogh’s artwork to life, pushing the boundaries of sound design and composition, and inspiring audiences globally.

Additionally, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Orta Interactive Studio, based in Pittsburgh. Together, we worked on “Sweet Sorrow: Romeo and Juliet,” a remarkable VR theatrical experience that brings Shakespeare’s words to life through immersive technology. I also contributed to their profound location-based immersive VR documentaries, “Auschwitz VR” and “Kristallnacht VR,” installations housed in the Mania Nudel Holocaust Learning Center in Miami.

My most recent personal concept album project, “The Legends of Altair and Vega,” draws inspiration from a well-known story in Chinese Mythology. It delves into the forbidden love between Altair, a mortal man, and Vega, the Goddess of Weaving. Altair embarks on a poignant journey to reunite with Vega, who was taken away by the authorities in the Heavenly Palace. Throughout the album, each music piece serves as a chapter, narrating the encounters Altair has with various characters who become his steadfast teammates in achieving his mission.

My unique background as an Asian immigrant, bridging Western and Eastern musical cultures, has deeply influenced my artistic perspective. With a fervent desire to advocate for Asian representation, I strive to invite audiences to listen, appreciate, and gain a deeper understanding of the rich voice, stories, and perspectives within the Asian community.

Through my music, I am driven by the belief that storytelling possesses a profound power to not only heal wounded souls but also inspire positive transformations in people’s lives. I remain committed to this vision, dedicated to creating impactful musical narratives that resonate with audiences, leaving a lasting impression and encouraging them to embrace positive change.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my own journey, three qualities that have had a significant impact are communication skills, curiosity, and the ability to form meaningful connections with others. These elements have not only shaped my growth as an artist but also enriched my overall experience.

First of all, strong communication skills have been crucial in collaborating effectively with clients, fellow musicians, and other creatives. The ability to articulate ideas clearly, actively listen, and engage in constructive dialogue is key to building successful collaborations and conveying the desired artistic vision.

Establishing meaningful connections with others has also been invaluable. Collaborating with fellow musicians, industry professionals, and like-minded creatives has not only broadened my perspective but also opened doors to new opportunities. Building relationships requires genuine interest, active networking, and a willingness to support and uplift others. Attending music events, joining online communities, and participating in collaborative projects can be great ways to foster connections and establish a supportive network.

Last but not least, curiosity has been a driving force in my artistic journey. Maintaining a sense of wonder and a thirst for knowledge has fueled my creativity and encouraged me to explore new genres, techniques, and approaches. Embracing curiosity involves staying open-minded, seeking inspiration from various sources, and continuously learning and growing as an artist.

For those early in their journey, my advice would be to prioritize developing communication skills, fostering connections, and nurturing curiosity. Cultivating effective communication will help you express your artistic vision and collaborate successfully. Building connections will provide a strong support system and create opportunities for growth. And embracing curiosity will keep your creative fire alive and propel you to explore new artistic territories. Embrace these qualities and skills, continuously improve upon them, and you will pave the way in the right direction.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I believe it’s important to have a contingency plan in place to navigate those moments. One strategy I find helpful is taking a step back and engaging in activities that help me regain clarity and balance. For instance, I often take a long walk in the city, allowing the peaceful surroundings to calm my mind and provide perspective. Additionally, calling a trusted friend, family member or loved one can be immensely therapeutic, as it allows me to express my feelings and gain valuable support. Engaging in creative outlets like cooking or engaging in hobbies also provides a healthy distraction and helps me reconnect with a sense of joy. Ultimately, finding strategies that work for you is key. Experiment with different approaches and identify what brings you comfort and relief during overwhelming times. Remember to prioritize self-care, seek support, and take intentional steps to regain a sense of calm and balance in your life.
