We were lucky to catch up with Larry Layfield recently and have shared our conversation below.
Larry, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Building confidence and self-esteem is often a gradual process, shaped significantly by overcoming challenges and gaining a deeper understanding of oneself. For me, it involved facing difficulties head-on and learning from each experience. With every obstacle I navigated, I began to recognize my own strength and capabilities. Additionally, achieving smaller goals and tackling tasks that once seemed daunting were essential in fostering a sense of personal growth. These incremental successes, along with a continuous reflection on my progress, played a pivotal role in strengthening my self-belief. Over time, this accumulation of experiences led to a more profound sense of confidence and self-assurance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
With a diverse career that spans roles as a Film Producer, Music Producer, Project Manager, and more recently, a Multimedia AI Specialist, I have developed a unique skill set that combines creativity with strategic business acumen. My professional journey began at de Passe Jones Entertainment (DPJ), where I served as Executive of Internet Strategy/Marketing and Project Manager. This foundational experience enabled me to refine my expertise in managing complex projects and executing innovative strategies within the entertainment industry.
Since leaving DPJ, I have collaborated with a wide range of organizations, applying my leadership, creative vision, and strategic insights across various projects. My portfolio includes film projects across multiple genres—Horror, Comedy, and Drama—distributed on major streaming platforms such as Sony, Crackle, Amazon, and Netflix. In addition to my work in production, I have expanded into music, taking on roles as a Music Producer and Supervisor.
More recently, I’ve embraced the rapidly evolving field of Multimedia AI, recognizing its transformative potential in content creation and its ability to reshape the entertainment landscape. This intersection of technology and creativity has been particularly exciting, and I am committed to exploring new ways AI can enhance the storytelling process.
In addition to my production and music work, I’ve explored acting, taking on unique background roles such as law enforcement officers, prisoners, and zombies. These experiences have provided valuable insights into the importance of atmosphere and choreography on screen, which have greatly influenced my approach to production.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to share that my latest feature, Killing Mary Sue, starring Sierra McCormick, Dermot Mulroney, and Sean Patrick Flanery, will be released in June 2025. I served as one of the lead producers on this project, and I am eager for audiences to experience it. Additionally, I am preparing to transition into directing, with the goal of expanding my creative contributions to the industry.
Known for my professionalism, expertise, and ability to drive success, I remain committed to delivering impactful results across film, television, commercial, and branding projects.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Creative Vision & Innovation: The ability to conceptualize and execute original ideas across diverse projects is fundamental to my work. Whether producing films, overseeing music projects, or navigating the evolving landscape of Multimedia AI, having a clear creative vision and staying ahead of industry trends is crucial to driving success.
Project Management & Strategic Leadership: With years of experience managing complex projects and teams, I have honed my ability to oversee productions from concept to completion. My leadership skills, combined with a deep understanding of project management principles, allow me to stay organized, efficient, and adaptive while ensuring deadlines and budgets are met.
Adaptability & Technological Expertise: Embracing emerging technologies, particularly in the field of Multimedia AI, has become increasingly essential. My understanding of how AI can transform content creation gives me an edge in adapting to new tools and finding innovative ways to tell stories, all while maintaining the integrity of the artistic vision.
Advice I wish I had received earlier in my career:
1. Creative Vision & Innovation:
• Stay Curious: Expose yourself to new ideas, genres, and experiences. The more you explore, the more your creativity will expand.
• Collaborate with Challengers: Work with people who challenge your thinking. Surrounding yourself with diverse perspectives can lead to breakthroughs.
• Embrace Failure: Don’t fear failure—use it as a learning tool. Taking risks and failing forward is how you grow.
2. Project Management & Strategic Leadership:
• Prioritize and Let Go of Perfection: Break tasks down into manageable steps and focus on progress, not perfection.
• Communicate and Build Trust: Be clear, check in often, and listen. Trust is built through transparency and communication.
• Step Into Leadership: Take on leadership opportunities, no matter how small. Experience is the best teacher.
3. Adaptability & Technological Expertise:
• Stay Curious About New Tech: Don’t shy away from emerging tools. Dive in and learn as the industry evolves.
• Embrace Change: Technology evolves rapidly. Stay open to new ideas and be adaptable.
• Get Hands-On Experience: Theory is valuable, but nothing beats diving in and experimenting with new tools and techniques.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
One of the biggest challenges I am currently facing is adapting to the rapid changes in the entertainment industry. With audiences moving away from traditional cinema and increasingly consuming mobile-first, vertical content, the way people engage with stories has undergone a significant transformation. Additionally, AI is playing an increasingly prominent role, reshaping both the creative and production processes in ways I am still adjusting to. Staying agile and adaptable is more important than ever, and I am continuously exploring ways to embrace new technologies, respond to shifting audience behaviors, and stay ahead of the curve in storytelling. While navigating these challenges is complex, it is also an exciting time for innovation within the industry.
