We were lucky to catch up with Larry Roberson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Larry , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My purpose is I will ensure my relationship with God, and my family come first while being relentless despite adverse circumstances and fulfill my purpose to help others grow. I will consistently exercise the sacrifice needed to be efficient and effectively disciplined with my time to bring happiness to my future family while ensuring financial stability. My mission is to unlock potential and drive purpose to help individuals and teams achieve success while also demonstrating what a relationship with Christ looks like. Life is hard and everyone runs their own race. Life is a sport and there are no timeouts, and we all must understand we all run different races with different paces and different lengths. I understand my purpose in life is to help others learn and help motivate them to overcome the adversity in their life. I am the oldest of four and helping lead them and encouraging them throughout the years has helped give me the empathy to motivate and nurture without demeaning. Many times we want things but dont understand the race we want to run is not the race we will run. For example, I wanted to play college basketball but I didnt get a college scholarship until almost two years out of high school. I understand the power of being resilient and learning how to adjust in order to fight for the dreams I want to make into reality. Patience is key but urgency and being prepared is making sure when “when” arrives, the moment is dominated.
Being a spokesman and a light for God helps define who I am and regardless of what happens. Whether I am successful or struggling I understand my confidence comes from understanding that I am doing my part to fulfill His purpose and as long as I do that, I will be taken care of. When you align yourself with Christ, you put yourself in line with your purpose and the calling God has for you. And the confidence that you get with that allows you to fight through whatever narrative that is presented. This how I define demonstrating a relationship with Christ looks like.
iDRIV²E Without Fear

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a basketball coach who has coach internationally, on the D1 level and coached and trained kids as young as 5 years old. I love basketball and teaching all aspects of the sport. Since I am an educator who taught all levels of students, I understand how to reach athletes who have learning disabilities and players with a high basketball IQ. I love seeing and helping people set and attain their goals. Doesnt matter the age, everyone has aspirations, I have been blessed with the ability to help them understand what they need to do to attack their goals. I take the extra time to invest in players to help them understand what it takes for what they may feel is impossible to achieve.
I have developed a program that has helped students, athletes, and coaches become better at their craft.
Letsflytogether.org focuses on developing basketball players and other potential athletes.
LarryRoberson.com focuses on coaching and building relationships within the community that I work for.
Nlign (pronounced N-Line) is focused on the spiritual race we all are running whether we want to acknowledge it or not.
Never-idle.org focuses on the business of bringing all of the concepts above together. I am focused on helping individuals and teams become better mentally, spiritually, physically, skillfully, and tactfully.
Mental and physical health is very important and I have been studying how to condition the mind as well as strengthen the body. Within the next couple months I plan on being certified as a trainer.
I am also a realtor and if you are looking to purchase a home regardless of where you are I can help.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Drinking PEP²CI equals Success, GRYT & GRYND, Prepare for the When so you can dominate the Win. MORE
I came up with a couple acronyms on my road that have helped me endure and overcome. The first one is PEP²CI. Passion, Efficiency, Perspective and Perseverance, Consistency and Innovation equals success. You have to obsessed with a passion for what you love and be willing to just about anything to attain your goals without breaking the rules of who you are. Efficiency is highly important because your life is a whirlwind so managing your day to day activities while also attacking your goals require a plan that will work. This is where Perspective and Perseverance comes into play. Most perseverance comes with being able to look at a situation and evaluate it by looking at the situation in different ways. and then learning how to adjust if needed. Once you understand what you need to do, you now have to be consistent because the one time you let up maybe the only chance you are given. Side note…We are all given chances but chances look different based on where you are at. Chances can start in practice while someone else’s chance may be during the game. When you learn to identify your chances, you start to understand you have more of a role in your success than you might think. Opportunities are limited and everyone does not get the same amount so treat every opportunity like its your last. This is where innovation comes in. Creativity is important for creating a plan to attack what may seem to be the impossible. Innovation allows yourself to get ahead of others who maybe copying from someone else’s game plan. When you consume PEP ²CI the right way, it will lead to success.
Now this is where understanding the power of When is so important. You will not always know when your “when” arrives so you must be ready for when it does. This is where preparation comes into play. You should have a IEP, Individual Enhancement Plan that ensures you are developing into the person you need to be in order to achieve and maintain the goals that you have. Get a mentor, read and find information that will prepare you for that moment, and study people who has done what you are trying to achieve. Go high as you can and then comeback to the level that makes the most sense for you.
God Requires Your Time (GRYT). Your faith or belief in what you want requires an investment of your time. Now that time is not defined why perspective and perseverance plays a part in strengthen your your grit.
God Requires You To… (GRYT). God will requires actions. Faith without works is dead. Your consistent right actions will lead to you obtaining what is yours.
When you understand that whatever you want will at some point come to fighting. Your willingness to fight and win the all the battles associated to winning the war will show that you were gritty and grinded for what was meant for you.
Mind Over Reality Every… Simply focuses on the fact that even though looks a certain way, your belief, perspective, mindset and foundation can overcome every moment, second or day that doubt creeps in.
Different Race, Different Pace, Different When/Win
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Coach Fred Batchelor has been a good friend and who has helped me navigate the uncertainty of coaching. He has given me some sound advice while also giving me different perspectives on how to move and pursue. Coach Jamion Christian gave me a wonderful piece of information. He told me never allow anyone or anything jeopardize what you love. Dont limit yourself because of the culture overcome the culture and be a different. Phil Beckner helped me identify my 5 Cs which are Clarity, Conviction, Competence, Connection, and Confidence. He has also help me take my training players to the next level. Kevin Eastman has given me valuable information on the qualities of winning and how to be purposeful.
The Last Arrow first comes to mind because it talks about what it looks like to never give up and how we limit God based on how we see success. Keep shooting your shot until God says stop and not sooner.
Strategic – The skill to set direction, create advantage, and achieve executive excellence. The details in this book with identifying how to move is something you can use in all areas of life.
Relentless – The trainer of Michael Jordan details the differences superstars who consistently executes under pressure at a high level and those who crack. Embrace everything about you including the dark side that you have because that could be what is limiting your growth.
I am looking to connect with people who are looking to grow. More specifically athletes athletes and coaches but I am not limiting to just them. We all are playing the sport in life and if I can help, then lets get together and talk. Coachrobe@gmail.com
Basketball wise…
Basketball players who are looking to get their game to another level and who are looking to play in the USA or players looking to play abroad.
Looking for coaches who want to collaborate and work together or just talk the Xs and Os or coaches who are looking to become better at their craft.
I understand the international game and how to merge US and international concepts and development plans to create the best player prepared to play overseas or in the US.
I believe it is better to go all in on your strengths while taking the time to strengthen the weaknesses you have. Sports is a perfect example. Your role is what you need to be great at and master. This is where your strengths should shine but if you are a person who is not content, you need to develop different skills so that you can progress. There are tons of stories of players who were not that good who developed into great players because as they focused on their strengths, they took the time to work on areas of improvement. But in sports, you hit a pinnacle where you cant get any better, whether that has to do with age, skillset or the role. Now the focus has to be maintenance. This is where honing in on your strengths are very important because as long as you can deliver on what you are known for, you will be needed. As for people who are not in sports, this applies to your job. You may not be able to elevate your status, but your strengths are valued and you need to continually focuses on maintaining the skill you are known for. Sometimes working on being well rounded is not required but if it is, you need to make sure you are ready for that need. For example when the NBA went to small ball. The bigs in the league who were able to adjust and shoot the long ball, was able to stick around but those who were not did not stay in the league long.
Filling out the 5Cs – Clarity, Conviction, Competence, Connection, and Confidence was a game changer. Along with meditation and with following a morning routine that allows me to mentally prepare my mind for the day. This helps fight off imposter syndrome, connecting your job to your confidence, worrying with the uncontrollable.
The last 12 months I have grown in my relationship with Christ, my consistency and urgency with the way I move and think, I am able to articulate comfortably the thoughts that I have become a better leader.
