We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaShaunda Hoffman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have LaShaunda with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe I received my work ethics from my mother and my supervisors in the military. My mother was a dedicated worker she rarely took sick days. She taught me that a job can provide for your family and also be something you enjoyed.
As a teenager she requested I volunteer at the hospital as my first job. It taught me how to give my time freely so I’d appreciate when I was paid for my services.
While in the military I learned more about being part of a team and it prepared me for when I got out of the military and worked for the federal government. I was able to work on my own or as part of a team.
The work ethics I learned also helped me with my business – Hoffman Content. I used those discipline skills to complete my manuscripts and help authors learn how to promote their books.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
LaShaunda Hoffman is an author, book promotion strategist, and literary community builder. She’s the author of Building Your Readership, a guide designed to help writers confidently market their books and grow their audience. As a sci-fi romance author, LaShaunda blends heartfelt storytelling with innovative themes—from modern romance to interstellar love.
With over two decades of experience, she’s passionate about helping authors find their readers and thrive in the publishing world. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her grand boys or sipping tea and watching K-dramas.
She is currently working on bringing her science fiction romance to print.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important skills for me are reading, typing and writing.
Reading open up so many doors for me. I started reading at the age of four. I would win reading contests in school and the local libraries. I was even on a local radio station for reading the most books for the summer.
I never dreamed that my love for reading would take me from reader to a magazine publisher to an author to a Book Promotion Strategist.
My mother suggested I take typing in high school and I almost said no, but I took the class and I loved typing. It was a way to take the ideas in my head and put them on paper.
Those typing skills would benefit me the rest of my life. I was able to use them while I was in the military service and it’s the reason that I got a government job. I continue to used those skills to write my books.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is the author who is ready to show the world their book. They know their reader is out there, but they need help to learn how to reach them. They are eager to learn about book promotion and willing to work with me in order to reach their book promotion goals.
They don’t mind that they have to put in the hard work because they know when they do, they are growing their readership.
They are willing to invest in their time and funds to do whatever it takes to get their book out to the readers.
I love working with these authors because I know that they will have success, they’ll build their readership and write more books because they’re happy with their results.
