We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaShea Bridges a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
LaShea , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I overcame imposter syndrome by focusing on learning a new skill even when I didn’t want to or I thought I wasn’t going to be able to learn it. I had to push past my mistakes and keep going until I mastered it.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
For my day job, I do administrative work for a university. I’ve always wanted to do something on the side. Mainly, this is to have something to do part time when I retire from my full time job. A couple years ago I decided to learn to do a specialized type of hairstyle called Sisterlocks ™️. I love the way it feels when I’m finished with a client and they love their hair!!! There’s nothing like that feeling. I’m accepting new clients if you’re in the area 😉.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Some things that people in similar circumstances can improve in are persistence, willingness to learn and motivation. Try to keep going even when you feel like you can’t. Surround yourself with people who are positive and support you. Find a mentor. My sister was great at mentoring me as she’d already walked the path I wanted to go. Try to remember what your goal is and keep pressing towards it.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My sister was the perfect mentor for me. She pushed me to become better and showed me step by step what to do when she allowed me to shadow her while she was working with her clients.
