We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Latia Boggan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Latia, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Being optimistic actually took work for me. I began by reading self-help books. They really help to reshape your mind which is the largest part of the battle. During this time, I read a book called the Four Agreements and it changed my life. If you follow the four agreements, you will begin to feel the changes. Lastly, I wake up with an attitude of gratitude and I say 3-4 things minimum that I am grateful for or happy about every morning and every evening. It helps to center yourself and to realize that life could be way worse so be happy for the things you do have.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own a combat sport apparel brand called Helian Designs. The mission of this brand is to promote, highlight, and sponsor female athletes worldwide and to cover the world in sunflowers. In combat sports women are often underpaid, overlooked, and receive less advancement opportunities than their male counterparts. I was in the Marine Corps for 8 years and have been doing combat sports for 3 so I completely understand what being in a male dominated field and feeling like you are invisible can feel like. I created this brand to encourage all women and make them feel seen. A portion of every purchase helps me support fighters financially by sponsoring them and it pays shipping costs for free gear given to women focused gyms. Self-defense is so empowering and encouraging. It builds confidence. That is something I think every woman deserves to have is confidence in herself and what her body can do.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first skill is being a good networker. The quote it’s not what you know but who you know has a lot of truth in it. Also, the more people you help get to where they want to go the more people you have that are willing to do the same for you. The second skill is to have an attitude of gratitude. Being thankful and appreciating everything and everyone takes a lot of stress and pressure off of you. Also, when you focus more on the things you have you will notice how full and rich our lives are already. Lastly, be patient. Life is not a race, and neither is business, love, friendship, good food, good sex, and really anything that is good and matters. In order to grow patience, you just have to practice. It’s something that takes time unless you grow up with siblings apparently but I’m an only child, so it took some work for me.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The four agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I recommend this book to EVERY PERSON. There is not one single person on the planet that would not benefit from reading this book. I have read it multiple times, given it as a gift many times, purchased it and so on. It is a short and easy to read book. 10/10
