We recently connected with Latifah Fletcher and have shared our conversation below.
Latifah, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience is stemmed from multiple avenues such as personal experience, the environment I grew up in as a child and my support system. Also, the level of confidence I have fostered in self to set clear goals and achieve them. To expound a bit more about my background, I was born in the parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica and grew up in a rural community with no paved roads or street lights and the wooden fencing surrounding my yard was chopped down from nearby farm trees, I remember waking up 4am every morning to walk for miles to reach a bus stop when the local taxi driver wasn’t operational. Going to school was a big thing for me because of the sacrifices my Grandmother had to endure to make it possible for my cousins and I to get a formal education when she told us all the time that she did not have resources to pass the third grade and many skills she had was self taught and I saw how she made the best of her experiences and retired after 30 years as a cook for the Hospital.
I admire her so much for her to motivate us to take advantage of our current opportunities presented to us. This position allowed me get a front row seat to despair, pain, frustration and through it all there was a prevalent driving force to thrive and highlight the things that we did have around us as a village to not only be strong but to also flourish and use those moments to fuel my endeavors over the course of my life. As a result, of all those building blocks for a solid foundation I have cultivated a nurturing environment for myself and others around me by walking in my purpose.
I currently own multiple businesses as a entrepreneur, growing up I understood that acquiring a fulfilling education was a key requirement in leading a successful life and as furthered my education to currently holding a Master’s Degree and pursing the route to self mastery.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am the founder of TifahTheQueen Records, a independent record label that has garnered the respect of many different practitioners of music and of the arts. As a self-taught audio engineer, graphic designer, instrumentalist and executive producer. Being in the industry for 5 years, I am grateful for my many successes, failures and lessons along the journey.
My team and I are currently working on a couple projects surrounding multiple artistes that I am currently working closely with these rising artistes: Cidigi, Konsoull, Santos3rd and D’kronicle. In the coming weeks we will be releasing some fresh singles complimented by music videos and or lyric videos. Helping artiste cultivate their talents and reaching their career goals is the most exciting part of what I do everyday.
A new venture of mine to look out for will be my first podcast called, ” Riddim & Reality.” where I will be interviewing other creatives within the industry to speak on everyday struggles as a creative and working in the corporate world to bring awareness to the mental health of creative battling to follow their passion while being embedded in the life of a 9-5 employee. As well, as being transparent to my audience about my own experiences I’ve faced during the music industry to create a safe space for our creative outlet via the arts. The launch will announced on my social media platforms.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three most important qualities of mine are being very detailed oriented, adaptability and optimism. In my opinion there is no real advice one can give to another because each person will experience life on their own terms and me giving you advice will only lead a obscured view of qualities I have cultivated over the years based on my own strengths and weaknesses.
What I will say is this, be truly honest with yourself and follow the small voice you feel deep inside. That voice will always be stifled by the peer pressure of people expectations. Once, you find your voice. Never be timid to speak your truth! whatever that may look like for you.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
The creative community is always growing, evolving and changing right before our eyes daily. Of course, I am open to collaborating and or partner with. Videographers, Photographers, Muralists, Apparel Designers, Beatmakers, Poets, Content Creators etc.
