We recently connected with Latoya Stewart and have shared our conversation below.
I’ll say this in a whisper. The word self-care when presented to me sounded very universal, which made it challenging to apply in a way that would be consistently impactful. So, I approached the idea of self-care flexibly which allowed me to embrace the uniqueness of self and its Multifacetedness. From a therapeutic mindfulness approach, language matters. Changing the language would give a person the keys to be in tune with their unique self and encourage them to create a list of things that in the moment makes them feel natural joy. Small things like going for a run, watching your favorite tv show or working out. Sound familiar? Applying this concept encourages you to be in tune with self and recognize how doing these things personally identified for self would almost instantly shift your mood in a positive way. Allowing yourself to gradually add to your list and giving yourself permission to get in practice of accessing it when your mood is labile or just not feeling like yourself is a way of showing up for self in a unique way. Currently my Natural Joy list has meditation, a show called Special Ops: Lionesses with my favorite actress Zoe Saldana, eating large male crabs with my special dipping sauce and touching or climbing a tree. I could go on but I’ll move on. But, yes, changing my language and applying the concept of a Natural Joy List has had a meaningful impact personally and professionally. Great question!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Sure thing, my name is Latoya Stewart and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Private Practice owner in the State of Maryland.
My Private Practice is listed asThis Goes Out You LLC and no it is not named after Usher or Notorious B.I.G songs. We really are creating a space with you in mind. We are special because of our niche in supporting women of color, work towards being their highest self through implementation of mindfulness strategies and therapeutic modalities in individual and therapeutic group settings.
Mindfulness gives our clients the opportunity to increase insight through self-awareness with no judgment, practice of actively listening to their bodies in the moment through grounding techniques, self soothing strategies and intentionality of acceptance through seeing people as they are and being honest with self through identification of needs.
We recently expanded our services and are taking new clients. We provide individual, couples, marriage, family and monthly group mindfulness meditation sessions. We accept Medicaid, Cigna, Aetna, Optum and Johns Hopkins EHP. Our expertise also allows us to sit on panels, present and teach. We are actively working to bring on new clinicians as well with similar ideals to expand and serve on a larger scale.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three skills and qualities that were most impactful were building relationships, connecting with your personal power and kindness to self and others.
Relationships are important. My gentle advice would be to never give someone power over the direction of your career journey because you feel disrespected or mishandled. Shift your energy to what you have control over and come up with a plan. Never leave anywhere until you have gotten what you need from the environment.
Our breath has power. Our lineage has power. I won’t get too spiritual but that meme that says “You are your ancestors wildest dreams” and the one that says “ become so good at what you do that they can’t ignore you”. Yes, all of that. My advice is to do just that, head held high , chin up, humble and a force to be reckoned with.
Lastly, be kind to yourself. You are deserving of all things. I find that a lot of us have picked up discouraging voices along the way which over time has shifted to our own intrusive thoughts. It might be helpful to remember this affirmation “I am deserving of all things and I will walk in it boldly. My voice is the only one that rings true.”
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
