We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Latrice James a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Latrice, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity comes from my mother. My mom is a very thoughtful and giving person. I was raised to give to others when you can because you never know when you may need their generosity in return. Since a very young age, I witnessed my mom doing kind acts for others so I think that it’s something I just naturally picked up.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an HR professional forty hours a week and all other times, I’m the lifestyle content creator behind Pieces of Posh. Pieces of Posh (the business and brand) started out focusing on a world that revolved around thrift shopping – thrift tips, where to shop, personal thrift shopping, resell, etc. However, I soon realized that my audience was interested in many other aspects of my life beyond thrifting. It has been so fulfilling reaching and inspiring people by just sharing who I am wholistically. I love to travel. I love trying new experiences. I’m a foodie. I take pride in my personal style.
There is something about my life that says favor all over it. But that favor is nothing if I don’t share, support, inspire or at least motivate someone else to find or see the favor in theirs. Hence, the evolution of my brand. Through Pieces of Posh, I promote independence, creativity, simple joy and confidence.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, patience, pivoting. Never give up on your dreams or goals. However, understand the journey to get there may look or feel different than expected and that’s okay. Life is about learning and growing. All good things take time. Don’t be afraid to take a break or a step back, ask for help or start over.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Consistency. I’ve learned to just do it (create) even when tired or not really in the mood. The long-term reward is so much greater.
