We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Canchola a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic I get it from my mother , when I was little she was a stay-at-home mom . Even though she was a stay-at-home mom she would always find a way to help out my dad with bills his school and also around the house. She would always babysit kids during the week and in the weekend we would do yard sales she would sell tamales champurrado. Not only did she manage to do all the housework take care of us take us to school feed us do our homework with us and making sure we were okay she always found the time to make money with out losing time with us and teaching us the value of money and that money didn’t come easy we had to work for it. Coming from a Mexican home and being immigrant at the time she knew how hard it was to make that money .
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was born in Tijuana Baja California raised in California. I’m a mother to 4 kids, so with just that I keep myself busy and they keep me busy. How I came up with my business was , I was going thru YouTube videos months before covid started. And saw this idea of mixing gummy bears with plain chamoy and tajin. I tried it and didn’t really like it it was too sour /salty for me. So I thought to myself maybe if I mixed something else in it I can make it better for my liking. I was so proud of the taste it had after I added some of this and that 😁. I said why not start making it for my nieces and nephews parties, if they like them then maybe I can do something here. They were a bit with everyone. They soon started to ask me to bring some to parties or just simply drop some off when I had a chance. I did. This for a while then finally decided it’s time to name my product how to think of something that wasn’t too common of course some of the good names were already taken so I decided to name it after my oldest Daleyza. The name I came up with was Daleyza’s sweet and spicy treats! I started so slowly sell just a family and close friends and as I saw that it was becoming more of a hit I started doing events and here I am now gracias a dios everything has been going good for us .
For the month of October we have our Halloween bucket! which comes with 15 types of candies and nuts along with our ready to go chamoy keychain, Takis and some Mexican candy. These go on sale from October 1st -the 31st.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I have a lot of customer service experience , great in basic math, and eager to work hard and accomplish my goal. They advice I can give a person is to take something with you from every job you have from every experience you may have because you never know when you can use it in the future I have worked many years with customer service and I’m thankful for that because I can easily talk to someone about a product or explain to them how things work I am still a very shy person but when it comes to work and having to do customer service that shameless goes away and I’m very comfortable and talking and getting people to try new things
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
The biggest growth that I’ve had in the last 12 months is that I’ve been pushing myself to make my business grow . Last year I did some pop-ups throughout the whole year trying to get my name around trying to have people try my product . I’m so thankful that I did all that because this year I have actually done some farmers markets some bigger markets and hopefully soon I’ll be able to grow more and more
