Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Currens. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laura , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
In 2020 I was burnt out working in a traditional outpatient physical therapy practice. I had a 2 babies and was doing the working mom thing, had started a pelvic floor physical therapy program at work, and was busy. I loved the switch to pelvic health which I had started a few years prior and loved getting the program going at my office. But it was not rewarding rushing through really complex cases in the allocated time we had, and I left every visit frustrated, late, and bummed I couldn’t do more for the patient. Every year I got the same feedback on my annual reviews “Laura your cancellation rate is the lowest in the company and patients really like you, but you are always running late and that has to change”. Overall the annual review always felt really negative, and was focused on productivity and getting out of the room quicker to keep the flow of patients going without delays while increasing billing.
In February of 2020 my life changed when I was diagnosed with breast cancer when my second child was 10 months old, and I also had an almost 3 year old. It was a turmoil time where I had to stop breast feeding immediately and had surgery a few weeks later. I then fell into every tiny category and ended up having chemo for 3 months, then a double mastectomy, and every three week injections of a specific drug for 1 year. The day I had my chemo port put in I tried going back to work and could barely move my arm which didn’t go well for my work as a physical therapist. The world shut down that following week which was also my first week of chemo starting. I’m grateful in a sense since that made it easier to stop working during my chemo versus I was planning on trying to work during those 3 months. It allowed me to focus on me and my kids with the energy I had during that time frame. It was a hard year plus of treatments but I got through it all. When I went back to work after surgery/chemo I was a different person. I was super grateful to be alive but also looked at my life differently and couldn’t continue on the path I was going. I wanted more time with my kids and flexibility while also having a job that I loved. So I decided to quit my job even though my husband wasn’t working at the time, and follow my dream of starting my own practice where I could practice the way I wanted. This was the beginning of my practice dynamic flow physical therapy that I started in May 2022!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My business, Dynamic Flow Physical Therapy is growing and we are helping more and more people in the community who are suffering from pelvic health issues. Growing my team, and hiring two therapists has been amazing to help more people then I could have on my own, and is allowing me to make more of a difference in the community by being available for more networking/workshops/events. I’m proud of our commitment to our local community and involvement to spread the word on pelvic health. So many people struggle with leakage, pelvic pain, back/hip/sacroiliac pain, bowel issues, urinary urgency and frequency, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, testicular and penile pain, pudendal neuralgia, vulvodynia, and pregnancy/postpartum aches and pains. We are passionate in educating that pelvic floor physical therapy can be a vital role in the management and/or resolution of these symptoms and is for EVERYONE! Everyone has a pelvic floor and can have issues in this area. It’s also much more then just one of set of muscles. We look at the abdomen, spine, hips, and all surrounding areas to find the root cause of the issue and our goal is to get people back to their sports and activities without symptoms.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I feel my top quality is determination to change my life. Having gone through a major medical event made me realize life is not guaranteed and to make the most of the time I have on this planet! I don’t give up easy and just keep trying. Secondly, I knew I was a great physical therapist and had a lot to offer to the community. I knew I was helping people at my clinic job but that I could do so much more for long term optimal health and wellness if I treated the way I wanted to without the insurance and clinic restrictions. Lastly, flexibility is also key for a business. There are so many highs and lows in business, and it’s kind of an emotional rollercoaster. You need to be flexible to change if something isn’t working, or adapt to changes in many aspects. Being flexible and open to learning, knowing when I need help from someone else, adapting, modifying and changing is key in my opinion.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My business coaches have been the most helpful in building my confidence, systems, and educating me on business. We don’t learn any of this in PT school, and in general most PTs are super caring, generous people who just want to help everyone. To have a stable, growing business we need to learn business skills and overcome our own mindset issues is key to success. I’m beyond grateful for the decision to invest and commit to learning and have surprised myself how much I have enjoyed learning these skills!
