Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Dumpert. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laura, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I am naturally a creative person, but I spend time every day browsing for new ideas and new trends in colors, fashion, travel, and of course weddings! I love to attend floral workshops where I can collaborate with other creative people and learn new techniques.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a wedding and event florist. I travel anywhere worldwide flowering beautiful events from luxury weddings to corporate events to parties.
I found my passion for flowers as a child from gardening with my grandmother. She taught me a lot and I developed a passion for floristry working alongside her.
I have such a love for how flowers can tell a story and the smiles they put on people’s faces.
I have had some incredible opportunities working with top designers and have flowered many events including the Oscars Griot Gala, Season 17 of Married At First Sight and the upcoming season of Love Is Blind.
This isn’t a job for me, its a blessing. To be a part of peoples joyous moments is an honor and a privilege. Because every event is unique, I customize all of my designs to fit your vision. No cookie cutter weddings here! My flowers create an experience and immerse you in a beautiful story.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Owning a business is a challenge in so many ways.
First and most important is to understand your customers. What are they looking for in a florist? What is trending? How can I set myself apart from the others?
Secondly, I have had to learn skills that have nothing to do with floristry. Bookkeeping, accounting, social media marketing, insurance and licensing etc. The business aspect is just as important as the product. Hiring an accountant and a social media manager have been top in my book for assisting me in being able to do what I love- designing!
Thirdly is education! I am always doing continuing education, workshops, retreats, classes, whatever I can do keep honing my skills and learning new techniques.
If you’re just starting out I advise taking a business and marketing class, along with a social media class. Know the logistics of your business before getting swept up in the fun parts!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking to collaborate with other wedding and event professionals from around the world. Planners, photographers, venues, other florists etc are the building blocks of my business. I like to meet new people and support each other. I believe in community over competition! I specialize in luxury weddings and events and love to travel, especially for destination weddings!
If you are a vendor who would like to collaborate I would to chat! You can email lauradumpert@gmail.com to connect
