We recently connected with Laura Sofia Dominguez and have shared our conversation below.
Laura Sofia , thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I have to definitely give credit to dance classes. I started dancing when I was four years old, and from such a young age, I had to: get to class on time, stretch before and after it, have the specific uniform, the clean hairstyle, memorize choreography, etc. For some reason these dancing values, got translated into my daily life. It allowed me to develop an extra muscle of adapting into something, and being ready for it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi there! Im Laura Sofia Dominguez & I first wanted to thank you for letting me be part of this, and for reading a little bit of my story. I am an actress, dancer and singer from Caracas, Venezuela based in Los Angeles. I was raised by Colombian parents, meaning that, until today, I’m still not sure if Arepas are Venezuelan or Colombian, but it’s indeed my happiest confusion! (Im joking, Venezuelans are way better… oops)
I started dancing when I was four years old, the styles of Tap, and Flamenco. Later on, I started competing professionally, now expanding my training with Hip- Hop, Contemporary and Lyrical. Starting my career as a dancer, helped me to have a smooth transition into acting and therefore singing; Everything felt as a whole, it started to emerge over the years, and my instrument followed its spontaneity until it found the potential & the realization of “wow, I am meant to do this” (I know it sounds extremely confident of me, but I promise, I’m absolutely not qualified for any other career that exists on this planet, well, maybe taking care of puppies, but that’s it)
After graduating from one of Colombia’s leading performing arts schools, GA Integridad Actoral, and from The Art of Acting Studio, Stella Adler, LA; I’ve had the opportunity to perform in numerous theatre productions, commercials & dance performances. My most memorable characters in theater have been: Irina in The Three Sisters, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing and Penelope in The Odyssey. I learned such different values, motivations, each heart’s objectives and aspirations. I’m so grateful with each one of them, they allowed me to grow and become a stronger artist as much as a stronger person; & that’s maybe one of my favorites things about this craft; As well as the ability of surrender into a character & the exorbitant drive we feel when we tell stories that we connect & care about. I could talk about this all day, but I’ll stop with one of the best parts of acting which is “I will let it to your imagination!!!”
You will be able to see me in my first feature “The Whistler” a thriller to be announced this year, & if you feel like it, I recommend you to start watching this jewel of tv show called “P-Valley”; Season three is coming out some time soon, and maybe you’ll be able to see a Latina girl exploring this world in one episode. Or maybe not, who knows…
Thanks again for reading until here; And I deeply encourage you to write about yourself and your story. We are important, you are important!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I will say Passion of course, Curiosity & Discipline!!!
Discipline is your GAS as a human being. When the motivation is gone, self-discipline is your best friend.
If you are looking ways to train it, I would definitely recommend finding a Hobby that really makes you curious; try to learn the way that world works. You will indeed learn something new, but you will also open the door of understanding and dedicating your time into evolving a new routine, that will be positively transmittable to your daily life.
My worst enemy is procrastination, and my way to separate it from me, is by finding THE purpose on the things that I’m doing. Write them down and read it three times, make it a habit until you don’t have to do it anymore. (Don’t feel the insecurity of finding the craziest most worldwide meaningful purpose, that was my struggle at the beginning; As long as you have reasons of why its important to you, you’re good to go, there’s nothing more powerful than that.)
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I am indeed going through the challenges of being a Venezuelan girl in this industry.
Representation matters, we all know & say that, but I think it should be shifted as “Authentic representation matters”; because the amount of generalizations in every script, auditions, movies… big movies, with Latino communities (and many others), is so lazy and repeated. It lacks the genuine interest of educating yourself about it. And is very dishearten.
But that struggle itself, inspired me to not just wait for an accurate story to come into my hands, it has allowed me to start writing them, & so have my community. Keep creating your own stuff, expand those worlds, you will be heard!
