Meet Laurel Barrett

We were lucky to catch up with Laurel Barrett recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Laurel, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I have discovered my purpose in life through giving back to the community and spreading joy wherever I go. It brings me fulfillment and meaning like nothing else ever has.Every act of kindness, every moment spent uplifting others, reaffirms my belief that this is what I was meant to do. Whether it’s volunteering, lending a helping hand, or simply sharing a smile, I find my truest self in making a positive impact on those around me.In every encounter, whether big or small, I am reminded of the profound ripple effect that kindness can have. Each smile exchanged, each hand extended, creates a chain reaction of goodness that transcends boundaries and spreads throughout the community. It’s in these moments of connection and service that I feel most alive, knowing that I am contributing to something greater than myself. My purpose is not just a destination but a journey, where every step forward is guided by the light of compassion and the desire to make the world a brighter, more joyful place for all.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a fourth-generation Colorado native, my roots run deep with a commitment to serving others. My journey into philanthropy began early, shaped by my experiences in Girl Scouts where I learned the profound impact of even the smallest acts of kindness. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to the cause of giving back, embodying the spirit of compassion and generosity.

In September 2023, I took a monumental step in my mission by establishing the Global Volunteer Recognition Program LLC. This initiative, born from my passion for recognizing the unsung heroes of our communities, aims to celebrate individuals from diverse backgrounds who have made significant contributions through volunteering. It’s a program built on inclusivity, welcoming volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, recognizing that every act of service holds immense value.

At the core of the Global Volunteer Recognition Program is my firm belief in the power of recognition. I understand the transformative impact of acknowledging the tireless efforts of volunteers, who often work behind the scenes, driven solely by their passion for making a difference. Through this program, I seek to amplify their voices and inspire others to join the noble cause of service.

My dedication to philanthropy goes beyond just creating the Recognition Program. I host monthly virtual service projects that anyone can participate in, offering opportunities for individuals to make a positive impact from the comfort of their homes. I’m here to support volunteers, offering resources and encouragement to prevent burnout and ensure that every individual feels valued and appreciated for their contributions. Our program is guided by core values that reflect our commitment to recognition, integrity, compassion, impact, collaboration, innovation, accountability, inclusivity, gratitude, and empowerment.
I am proud to announce that the Global Volunteer Recognition Program is also a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, further validating the exceptional efforts of our members in making a positive impact on society.
I serve as both a visionary leader and a compassionate advocate for those who dedicate their time and energy to serving others. My presence at awards ceremonies and events is meant to inspire teams to continue striving for excellence and reinforce the importance of recognizing the collective efforts of every individual.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. **Resilience**: In the face of challenges, setbacks, and failures, resilience has been crucial. It’s the ability to bounce back, adapt, and keep moving forward despite obstacles. Developing resilience involves cultivating a growth mindset, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems, and seeking support from others when needed. To improve resilience, individuals can practice mindfulness, build a strong support network, set realistic goals, and view failures as opportunities for growth rather than defeat.

2. **Continuous Learning**: Embracing a mindset of continuous learning has been essential for growth and adaptation in a rapidly changing world. This involves staying curious, seeking out new knowledge and skills, and being open to feedback and constructive criticism. To enhance continuous learning, individuals can cultivate habits such as reading regularly, attending workshops or seminars, taking online courses, seeking mentorship, and actively experimenting with new ideas and approaches.

3. **Effective Communication**: Effective communication skills have been instrumental in building relationships, collaborating with others, and conveying ideas persuasively. This includes verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills, as well as active listening and empathy. To improve communication skills, individuals can practice clarity and conciseness in their messaging, seek feedback on their communication style, actively listen to others without interrupting, and engage in role-playing exercises to hone their ability to articulate ideas effectively.

Advice for individuals early in their journey:

1. **Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity**: Understand that failure is a natural part of the learning process and an opportunity for growth. Instead of being discouraged by setbacks, use them as valuable learning experiences to improve and adapt.

2. **Seek Feedback and Mentorship**: Actively seek out feedback from others and find mentors who can provide guidance, support, and perspective. Learning from those who have gone before you can accelerate your growth and help you avoid common pitfalls.

3. **Invest in Continuous Learning**: Make a commitment to lifelong learning and growth. Take advantage of resources such as books, online courses, workshops, and networking opportunities to expand your knowledge and skillset. Stay curious and open-minded, and be willing to adapt and evolve as you progress on your journey.
