We were lucky to catch up with Lauren recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I absolutely love this question because I actually don’t believe in “a purpose.” That is a little bit of a hot take, but think about this – if we spend our whole lives searching for our purpose, what happens to the moments leading up to that and then what happens once that purpose is “fulfilled?” The moments leading up to that would be in pursuit of something greater/bigger/different than the moment we are in. I don’t think there is an easier way to miss out on what is right in front of you than looking for what is ahead.
You see, I think God created us to find purpose in every single day, every single situation. If we change our mindset to seek “purpose” throughout our day, everything changes.
Picture this – you wake up in the morning and make the choice to begin looking for opportunities to be a light. Then you walk into the kitchen and sit down with your spouse for a moment and ask them how they are. You find intentionality in that moment and allow them to start their day knowing they are cared for. Then you get your coffee at the local coffee shop and make a heartfelt compliment to the barista. She smiles back at you and you leave knowing you uplifted her. As you are walking out, you are able to hold the door for an elderly couple who sincerely thanks you as they slowly make their way through the door. Then you get in your car and instead of getting upset at the person who cut you off, you make the choice to consider their situation. You think to yourself “maybe they are on their way to see a sick family member or just got some tough news.” As you drive past, you pray for them instead of giving them a dirty look. — All of this could happen before you even start your work day! Imagine that! Imagine living your life like a scavenger hunt of purpose everyday! Your entire life would change before your eyes!
I began learning this idea when I was in a really dark place. I was in college, feeling really lost and alone. I was struggling with my mental health and a sense of belonging. I didn’t know what my “purpose” was and because of that, I felt so useless. As my relationship with the Lord grew, this idea of creating purpose in every situation began to unfold. It wasn’t about finding a single purpose, but being a light for others to see the best in themselves….and that was enough purpose for me to look for everyday.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
After being cut from the dance team at my dream college and getting rejected from nursing school countless times, I found myself in a really dark place and struggling deeply with my mental health. I came to know the Lord in my sophomore year and everything changed. I moved to Florida, graduated nursing school and went on to dance professionally in the NFL for both the Miami Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys. Through this redemption story, I never forgot silently struggling in my college dorm room. I remember not knowing where to turn, who would understand and if I would, yet again, feel rejected if I reached out for help. I needed someone to meet me right where I was.
It was those memories that led to the creation of Outlast Audio. I was determined to build something that would help the person suffering behind closed doors. Outlast Audio is a website that contains a library of on-demand mental health support. We have licensed mental health professionals from across the country that have written exercises, strategies, breath work, meditations etc. on different emotional categories (anxiety, depression, anger, loneliness etc). We then turned each of these into audio recordings (3-5 min long) and paired with customized music to give you support right in your moment of need. Our listeners never speak to anyone, so we eliminate wait times, call backs, appointment scheduling etc. Our goal is to stand in the gap where support is lacking and prevent anyone from feeling alone in their time of hardship.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think grounding yourself in the truth of God, surrounding yourself with people who know more than you and never losing the drive to learn have been the most impactful on my journey.
Grounding yourself in the truth of God helps to handle all kinds of things that people experience, not just in becoming an entrepreneur, but in life itself. Things like imposter syndrome, finding your purpose, or feeling like you aren’t enough can be addressed by coming back to God’s Word. When we know what He says about us, when we find our identity in what He has done for us, what the world tries to confuse us with becomes background noise.
Surrounding yourself with people who know more than you is crucial. By just proximity to those who have been where you are, you will hear ideas that change the way you think about your whole business, your whole approach and the way you can better serve people.
Lastly, never losing the drive to learn will keep you humble and keep you (and whatever venture you are working on) evolving.
