Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren Bowman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lauren, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I knew at a young age that I wanted a career in music. I was interested in other careers, like possibly becoming a computer programmer, a golf teacher, or even joining the military, but no matter what I did, I always came back to music. At first, I wanted to just teach piano privately, but later was able to experience teaching public school as a volunteer at a local middle school. I observed how happy the students were when they arrived to either band or orchestra class. It reminded me of my early years in elementary school, running to choir practice in the auditorium. I observed a few music teachers, and saw how much fun the students were having (those who weren’t good at other subjects, yet were good at music). I made it my purpose to teach music to as many people as possible to make the world a happier place. I learned that music is therapeutic, it’s fun to practice, it brings people together, and it requires discipline and hard work. Overall, music helps improve the culture of the school and can bring people together in various work environments. After working a different job within my district for one year (unrelated to music) I realized that I missed teaching music and wanted to move back into the classroom. You don’t realize how much you miss something until it’s gone. Now, I am happy to continue teaching music at the high school level (band, piano, and ukulele), teach at a local music school, and even privately to students of all ages. I hope that my impact will be apparent when I leave the teaching profession one day. In the meantime, I will continue to fulfill my purpose and bring happiness to everyone who learns to play an instrument.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Currently, with Lotus Lady Music LLC, I am currently focusing on teaching music to students outside of my job with my school district. This includes teaching piano, ukulele, guitar, bass guitar, alto saxophone, and even music technology. I also focus on arranging ukulele music for intermediate players, and am currrently working on publishing a book of my ukulele arrangements. Currently, students can book a lesson with me on my website: http://beacons.ai/lotusladymusic.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think that the three qualities that were the most impactful in my journey, were to learn to become patient, to avoid using too much technology by using critical thinking, and be able to think outside the box. In order to become a teacher, you must be patient, and in order to become patient, you have to teach students of all ages and learning abilities.
To develop critical thinking, I would limit internet use or the use of AI to create things because we need to train our brains to not be so dependent on computers. That way, we can think like people did hundreds of years ago, and learn to become creators instead of consumers.
Lastly, you must be able to think outside the box. Sometimes it takes radical thinking to approach things with a fresh outlook. I am always open to learning new things and using that knowledge to solve problems.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I would spend that decade doing everything that I was never able to accomplish while I was in my twenties, thirties, and forties. This mostly includes traveling the world, visiting as many countries as possible, taking a few motorcycle road trips with some friends, and trying to make as many friends as I can to fulfill the lack of friendships I had while I was in school and working in my younger years. I would also do my best to teach my daughter as much as I can about life so she can become better prepared.
