Meet Lauren Brown

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.

Lauren, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

As a self-taught wedding florist, the feeling of being an imposter was a shadow that followed me, especially when admiring the breathtaking work of established professionals on platforms like Instagram. My way of stepping out of that shadow involved a dedicated process of self-directed learning. Each inspiring post became a lesson, dissected through the lens of my fine art background to understand the elements that worked and those that didn’t. This critical analysis armed me with a deeper understanding of floral design principles, far beyond what I initially grasped. It wasn’t until fellow local industry professionals began to acknowledge and compliment my work that the persistent feeling of inadequacy finally began to recede, replaced by a growing sense of confidence rooted in both my own diligent efforts and the validation of my peers.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

At Woven Blooms, I pour my heart and artistic vision into crafting bespoke floral designs for weddings, transforming each celebration into a uniquely beautiful experience. As a self-taught florist with a background in fine art, my approach is deeply rooted in understanding composition, color theory, and texture, allowing me to create arrangements that feel both organic and thoughtfully curated. What excites me most about this work is the opportunity to connect with couples and translate their individual stories and dreams into tangible floral artistry. It’s incredibly special to witness the joy and emotion that thoughtfully designed blooms can evoke on such a significant day.

Beyond the aesthetic beauty, Woven Blooms is also deeply committed to an eco-conscious approach to floristry. Recognizing the environmental impact of the floral industry, I prioritize sustainable practices whenever possible. This includes sourcing locally grown flowers and foliage when in season, utilizing eco-friendly alternatives to floral foam, and minimizing waste through thoughtful design and composting. I believe that beauty and sustainability can bloom together, and I strive to create stunning wedding florals that are kind to the earth.

Ultimately, Woven Blooms is more than just a floral design service; it’s a passion for creating meaningful art that enhances life’s most precious moments, all while treading as lightly as possible on our planet. I am dedicated to providing personalized service, exceptional artistry, and a commitment to environmental responsibility for every couple I have the privilege to work with.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back at my journey as a wedding florist, three key aspects stand out as particularly impactful: time management and logistical understanding, visual communication, and perhaps most importantly, self-confidence. The ability to meticulously plan and manage the intricate logistics of a wedding – from ordering and preparing flowers to on-site setup and takedown – has been crucial. Without strong time management skills, the delicate dance of ensuring everything comes together flawlessly on the big day would be impossible. My advice for those starting out is to embrace detailed planning. Create timelines, break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and don’t be afraid to over-prepare. Experience is the best teacher here, so learn from each event and refine your processes along the way.

Secondly, my background in fine art instilled in me the power of visual communication. Being able to clearly articulate my design concepts through sketches, mood boards, and even just descriptive language has been invaluable in connecting with clients and ensuring their vision is understood and brought to life. For those early in their careers, practice translating your ideas visually. Experiment with different ways of presenting your concepts, whether it’s through digital mockups or hand-drawn sketches. The clearer you can communicate your vision, the more confident your clients will be in your ability to execute it.

Finally, cultivating self-confidence has been a gradual but transformative process. In the beginning, especially as a self-taught artist in a field with many established professionals, self-doubt can be a significant hurdle. My advice here is to celebrate every small victory, learn from every perceived setback (without being overly critical), and surround yourself with a supportive network. Seek feedback, but also trust your artistic instincts. Confidence grows with experience and with the recognition of your own unique skills and perspective. Believe in the value you bring, and that belief will shine through in your work and interactions.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

As Woven Blooms has grown and the scale of weddings has become increasingly elaborate, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a one-person operation is managing the sheer manpower required to execute these larger events seamlessly. Initially, the thought of relinquishing control was daunting, but I quickly realized that to continue growing and serving my clients effectively, learning how to build and manage teams of freelance florists was essential. This transition came with its own set of hurdles, from the initial learning curve of finding reliable and skilled freelancers who aligned with my aesthetic, to the ongoing complexities of team communication, delegation, and ensuring a cohesive vision is executed flawlessly across multiple hands. It’s been a journey of learning to trust others, clearly communicate expectations, and navigate the nuances of team dynamics, all while striving to maintain the personal touch and high standards that define Woven Blooms.
