We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Daniels a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My mom. My mom has been an international flight attendant since the 70’s starting her career with Pan Am before switching over to United – with whom she still flies with. In college she majored in Spanish which is how she was able to start flying international flights early in her career while most flight attendants with her lack of seniority were only flying domestic flights. My mom has always lived for her kids – myself and my two younger brothers. Despite flying internationally several times a week, I remember her being at every ballet performance, soccer game, beach day, scheduling our birthday parties for when she was sure to be there, and when she had to fly on Christmas, she said she wrote Santa a letter and asked him if he’d deliver our gifts early so we could all celebrate together. She’d plan for when she was going to be gone which made it seem like she was always there when it mattered. Flying internationally several times a week I’m sure is truly exhausting but she never complained. When she was home she’d do the cleaning and cooking and be our chauffeur to all our weekend sports. And in the midst of all of this, she is the friendliest person I knew. She can strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere and completely throw someone off with her unexpected interactions. A gift I’m sure she perfected being on a plane for days at a time. It’s from her that I learned about working hard, being efficient with time, and the attitude you choose in work and in life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a realtor with milehimodern in Boulder County & Denver metro. I wanted to be in a career where I could help and provide value to others on a daily basis. I am truly a people pleaser at heart, so nothing makes me happier than happy clients after buying or selling a home. I also wanted to be in a career where I’d get out of it, what I put into it. I love to work hard, and I’m okay with working long days, and strange hours – but I wanted to make sure I’d see the fruits of my labor if I was going to put in that kind of work and time. Real estate checked those boxes for me.
The most rewarding aspect of being a realtor is hands down, happy clients. Clients who are happy with and feel successful in their home purchase, or home sale, clients who are happy with the process and experience I provided, clients I connected with and can become friends after a transaction. Clients who loved their experience so much they feel comfortable referring me to their friends and family.
In my business I’m currently really passionate about diving deep into treating the business like a business. Being in the office 9-5, dialing in my systems to create steady business, taking advantage of my most productive hours, and expanding my knowledge outside of where my current expertise stand.
The biggest takeaway I want those reading to know is that I truly enjoy helping others, whether that’s directly with a home purchase or sale, or as a real estate resource with guidance about home reno projects, etc. I strive to be an expert so I can provide the best value possible to others.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’m an avid runner, previously qualifying for 2 marathon Olympic Trials. Training at that level took dedication, hard work, perseverance, sacrifice, and the attitude of being “all in” – all skills that transfer to my real estate career. In addition, I worked in education as a teacher prior to switching to real estate, where I was proficient in honing in on different personalities and how those personalities learn best. That’s also a very important skill in real estate to ensure connections with the variety of clients I work with. I also just generally love helping people and while I’m not helping kiddos in the classroom anymore, I’m helping clients with some of the biggest financial transactions of their lives. I always try to put myself in others’ shoes in order to find the best way to communicate with, guide, and help them reach their goals. \
I think being self-aware of your strengths is important. Don’t try to use someone else’s strengths. Take advantage of your own and dial in on how you can develop those strengths further and how they’ll help you in your career and in life.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
After several years of helping buyers and sellers with their real estate transactions during the pandemic – a ver specific and quite frankly – crazy – market, it’s now a matter of constantly educating clients on this shifting market and providing both buyers and sellers with the facts and realistic expectations while still being a positive guide for them.
