We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren DeMoss a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
This is a tough question for me because, honestly, our industry can sometimes feel full of negativity, unhealthy competition, and people trying to tear others down. I have experienced all of that firsthand. When I first started as a stylist, I worked in a salon where I met some of my very best friends who are still in my life today. Even so, there always seems to be that one person who brings the energy down. For me, that was my manager. She constantly told people I would never make it in this industry. There was a point where I almost believed her.
One of my best friends finally pulled me aside and told me I had a gift, and that I could succeed if I blocked out the noise, kept my head down, and worked my butt off. So I did. That experience taught me something huge. No matter where you are or who you are with, there will always be someone who tries to convince you that you cannot do something.
At the end of the day, none of that matters. If you believe in yourself and put in the work, you truly can do anything. Looking back, I am actually thankful that person doubted me so loudly, because it pushed me to work even harder. It made me want to prove to myself, and to everyone else including her, that I can do this and that I will continue to be successful.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a hairstylist and the owner of The Beauty Bar, my private studio where I specialize in extensions and lived-in color. I love making people feel confident and excited about their hair. There is nothing better than seeing someone look in the mirror and instantly feel like the best version of themselves.
What makes my work so special to me is the connection I have with my clients. I really take the time to understand what they want, what they struggle with, and what makes them feel beautiful. My studio is cozy, fun, and a little luxurious because I want every appointment to feel like a treat and a moment for them to relax and recharge.
Extensions and balayage are definitely my thing. Extensions can totally transform someone’s look and give them that extra confidence boost. Balayage lets me get creative and customize a blended, natural look for each person.
Right now, I am really focused on growing my online presence. I want to share more of my work, show what the experience in my studio is truly like, and help educate clients with tips, product recommendations, and healthy hair routines they can use at home.
My brand is all about individuality and making every client feel like the main character. My motto is “All Eyes on Hair” because I want you leaving my chair feeling obsessed with how you look.
I feel so lucky that I get to do what I love every day. I am excited to keep growing, learning, and helping more people feel beautiful and confident.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, one of the biggest things that helped me was learning how to believe in myself. Confidence is something I had to grow into. There will always be people who doubt you or try to make you feel small. The most important thing is trusting that you are capable and reminding yourself why you started in the first place.
Hard work and consistency have also played a huge role in my journey. Success does not happen overnight and I had to show up, keep practicing, take classes, and give every client my best. For anyone just starting out, putting in the effort even when no one sees it makes all the difference. Consistency truly pays off.
The relationships I have built in this industry are another thing I value so much. Being kind, staying humble, and genuinely caring about people has helped me more than anything else. When you pour into others, that energy comes back to you.
If you are early in your career, believe in yourself even when it feels tough, work your butt off, and surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed. You are capable of so much if you stay focused and trust the process.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The people who have helped me the most are definitely my support system. My friends, my family, my partner, and the amazing work family I have around me have all played such a huge part in my journey. They believed in me when I doubted myself and pushed me to keep going when things felt tough. I truly would not be where I am without their love and encouragement.
I have also grown so much from taking education, working with brands, and staying connected within the hairstylist community. Learning from other talented artists keeps me inspired and pushes me to keep leveling up. One of the things I love most about this industry is that there is always something new to learn. Being surrounded by passionate people motivates me to keep improving and become the best version of myself behind the chair.
