We recently connected with Lauren Goetz and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I’m constantly experimenting with my jewelry and keeping inspiration in my back pocket whenever I’m away from my studio. I also keep a notebook of all my creations and am always thinking about future events and craft shows so it helps me be on track. I strive to take on new challenges with commissions every chance I can get. It is also important to not let the work burn you out so breaks from creating help me immensely especially on the hard days.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My newest collection of earrings has dropped on my Kofi website and is available to purchase now! Catch me locally at local markets in Sault Ste. Marie to experience the magic of my creations. I’m always posting deals every day!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Metal allergies were my first concern when creating jewelry but I have overcome the burden of switching to stainless steel hardware like earwires and stud posts whenever possible! I definitely recommend doung your research on metal allergies prior to creating a business selling jewelry.
My second chunk of knowledge includes just experimenting! You might create something you never thought you’d make and have someone who buys it absolutely adoring it and asking for more!
Third, I would highly recommend using high quality materials to ensure your products last for a lifetime; this ensures customer loyalty.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Having no sales for the start of this year has been personally rough. Without enough sales, I can’t create as often as I’d prefer, but I know that being patient until I can afford more supplies will pay off in time.
