Meet Lauren Jordan

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Jordan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

It is the only thing to keep me going! For a long time I struggled with self identity; who I was and what I was going to do that truly brought me happiness. Life tells us to go to school, find a job, take a vacation once a year and work until 65. Absolutely not. I knew there was more to life than the everyday mundane. I started to loath my place of work, to the point of listening to positive/motivational speeches on my way to work so my co-workers would not notice my discontent. Optimism is hard to keep when continuing to make those same everyday decisions that bring unhappiness. So, I knew I had to make a change. And once I did, the exhilaration I felt from that one decision to reject a higher position, set me on fire! I decided to take control of my life and go after what I wanted. My optimism comes from faith. Knowing that as long as I stay true to myself, my passions, and what brings me happiness, I know I am on the right path. My success will continue to unfold how it’s supposed to as long as I allow it to. The moment I step away from myself, I can feel it. I know when I’ve made a wrong turn but I always find my way back. And that’s what’s most important.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Licensed Esthetician! I love skin. I’d like to consider myself a skin therapist because you can tell a lot about a person by their skin. Their habits, if they take care of it, if they’re happy/sad/stressed, what it’s been through, where it’s going if you don’t intervene, etc. Most of all, I love healing clients’ skin concerns. We are our own worst critics. I speak from personal experience from struggling with acne, scarring, and my body image. So when I started getting chemical peels, eating better and seeing results, I was elated! When I see a client’s progress and their response to their progress, it truly makes my heart sing. I am passionate about making people feel their best! Because when you look good, you feel good, and vice versa! My clients have this glow about them that I want to continue to water and pour into. My absolute favorite thing about what I do is when I get a new client and they seem quiet, reserved, isolated. But after a couple of appointments, they slowly start to reveal parts of themselves; they start talking more, disclosing personal experiences, asking for advice, etc. I love that! That means they are becoming comfortable with me and I learn something new every time. I can relate to their initial aloof nature because I am the exact same way. I have to feel you out first before I let you in.

I’m currently enrolled in school pursuing my Bachelors Degree in Business Administration! Further strengthening myself and my business skills is always the goal.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Customer service, sales experience, professionalism. Before I was an Esthetician, I was a spa manager, supervisor, sales associate, and server. All of these positions contributed to my success as a business owner. People will forget what you do/say to them, but they will never forget how you make them feel, this is why customer service is so important. My goal is to give my clients an experience with each visit. They’re not just getting a facial; they’re taking time away from their families, jobs, obligations, and spending their money with ME. I’m definitely going to make sure it’s memorable and leave a lasting impression. Next, being a sales person is not just about selling your product. It’s all about your client; building rapport, getting to know them, getting them to trust you and most importantly, selling the solution! Finally, professionalism. Unfortunately, I feel this is a major skill that is lacking in the beauty industry and a lot of the time why consumers won’t spend their money with an individual/place of ‘business’. Again, clients need to feel like they can trust you and that you’re knowledgeable in your field. Making sure you are dressed appropriately and conducting yourself in a professional manner will set you and your business apart.

The best advice I can give is to get a temporary job (6 months-1 year) where you can gain skills that’ll benefit yourself and your business. For example, get a job that has great sales training. Before I had sales experience, I was very awkward with the public. This got me comfortable with pitching, rejection, building client relationships, etc.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played an important role in your development?
Atomic Habits. This book is basically about how small, everyday tweaks eventually make huge impacts. I love this book and gained a wealth of clarity reading it. One excerpt that stood out to me is how our surrounding environment directly affects our mental health and clarity; if your home/space is unorganized, so will your mental. I’ve never been a messy person, but I am a procrastinator. However, now I have a quick nightly routine where everything gets put back in its place. That way the next morning you wake up to a complete fresh start and you don’t need to complete yesterday’s task. In all, this frees up time and mental space, allowing more time for creativity.
