We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Kurtz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren , so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
I think it comes from my work ethic years ago. I got my first job the day after I graduated highschool and I think that’s what taught me discipline early on. Be on time, work hard. So when I started my business I knew from day one I needed to get up early have a plan in mind, keep a schedule and stay motivated.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a professional art nerd haha, I love old cartoons and the look and style of 1940s tattoos and pin ups. Through the years that is what started to inspire style. I was always a lover for old Disney so you’ll notice a slight vintage twist but also I add blush to all my characters as a nod to traditional tattoos.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say please don’t give up. Keep practicing keep learning keep growing. It’s hard to do art full time, but go into it with a open heart and a plan. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. I talked to artists that I admire like Ann Shen, who gave me amazing time and advice, it really helps.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
It’s easy to feel this often. Overworking yourself is easy to do and allll the pressures that come with it. Lately when I’m feeling overwhelmed I stop, I put the pencil down and take a walk and do yoga. It has really helped my brain just refocus.
I also rely on my planner. I separate everything into different days so that I can take it all day by day and not feel like I’m trying to juggle it all at once
