We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Lajas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
My creativity is shown through everything i do! Of course, i have chosen my creative pursuits as a career, but outside of that, i can’t help but be drawn to color, art, and oddities, oh my! If it isn’t my writing or my music, my creativity is shown through my living space or my clothing. My makeup or my hair. I’ve been told i even look like a Creative (and i just hope that’s a good thing). In another life, i definitely was an interior decorator or fashion designer. Social media is also a great tool to flex one’s creative muscles and that is an absolute must in my line of work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Creative through and through. The last time, i was talking about the process of finishing my first book. This time, i can proudly say that it is completed and out for all to read! What a process it is to be a self-published author! I have learned and grown so much and i am only getting started. The thing about being self-published is that you also are your own publicist, social media manager, editor, event coordinator, etc. I have deemed myself a Foster Care and Adoption reform Advocate because that is what my book is about. The first step was to share my story. The next step is to be out in the community educating and advocating! I am currently getting ready for local events to do just that. I am also working on my next single which should be out before the summer ends. Music will always be my greatest passion and it has been a breath of fresh air to get back into the studio. I am a natural-born storyteller and want to create a space where others can be inspired to share their own stories so my talk show will be out soon too!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Definitely resourcefulness, patience, and resilience. I am self-funded in all my projects and pursuits so resourcefulness is a must. I wouldn’t classify myself as the most patient person so this was and is an ongoing battle for me! While i am a one-woman rodeo for the most part, i do have outside help from time to time which requires me to learn to have more patience with others. To understand that other people also have their own process, way of thinking, and work ethic. But the hardest part was to learn to have more patience with myself. Life happens and i have been knocked down more times than i can count. I have planned things perfectly for it to all fall apart or not work out as i had hoped. I had to stop putting imaginary deadlines on things because i was causing myself grief and anxiety when i didn’t meet them. Resilience is crucial because pursuing your passions as a career is not for the faint of heart. “Art” in any form, has little to no return on investment in the beginning so a lot of us still work other jobs to not only keep a roof over our head and food in our bellies, but also to have that extra money to pour right back in to our projects. At one time, i was working 3 jobs to make all this happen. My relationships suffered, my mental health suffered, and even my body suffered. Only resilience can make you wake up every morning, and still put one foot in front of the other, knowing that one day, it will all be worth it because despite every setback, every heartache, every time i went to bed hungry, I’d still choose the same path.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to collaborate with other creatives! I am always looking for musicians, producers, or photographers. I also would love to find people who want to talk about an array of subjects or have a story to tell themselves. I would be interested in others that already have a podcast or talk show in place to not only learn from them, but share my story as well.
