We recently connected with Lauren Lawson and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, thank you so much for making time for us today. We’re excited to discuss a handful of topics with you, but perhaps the most important one is around decision making. The ability to make decisions is a key requirement for anyone who wants to make a difference and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your decision-making skills.
I would say I developed strong decision making skills through a relentless urge to see plans take action. Nothing happens if there is no action taken. If you at least try, you may fail at first, but not trying means there is no chance of success – that is also a failure. So in my eyes, the only logical option is to try, and continue trying, until you eventually succeed.
We have had a million little blunders since opening a business already. At this point, it’s like, par for the course. Especially when working with other people, you have to learn to offer them grace because mistakes are inevitable and everyone can learn from them 🙂
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We started Scoots (baby clothing specializing in bamboo products) just over a year ago and have been lucky enough to have lots of success thus far! We are really excited about our 2024 lineup. We offer sizes NB up to 7Y currently, and are planning to introduce swimwear and other non-apparel products next year.
Being a new business with a limited budget, we have had to do all of our own marketing and it has been a huge eye opener for me as that has been primarily my responsibility. I definitely have a new respect for people in marketing, and it has been so fun to learn! For all the tech savvy ladies out there, it’s a field definitely worth exploring.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Tenacity, networking, and technology. Being honest, owning any kind of business will be made easier if you are proficient with technology and able to pick up new platforms/computer related skills easily. Networking is so important! From being able to navigate social media, creating a community related to your business, working with influencers, and getting free promotion through your customers, word of mouth is an invaluable tool to any business. And of course, tenacity, because none of the incredible innovations we take for granted on a daily basis would exist without it. 🙂
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
Being well-rounded is ALWAYS a good idea, for so many reasons. Sticking to the same tasks gets very mundane. Even if you find you’re not very talented in a particular area, the experience can prepare you for dealing with people who are. It’s like going to a mechanic when you know nothing about cars – you’re more likely to be taken advantage of if someone suspects that you’re totally clueless. If you take the time to learn even the basics in any field, you can better protect yourself and potentially save time/money/hassle. And who knows, by trying to learn new skills you might find one that you are passionate about and truly enjoy, and that can make your life much more fun!
