Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren McMinn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lauren, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding purpose (the why) is the ultimate question. I don’t believe that purpose is a finite (static) objective. It can, and should be malleable, as life and seasons change. Purpose can also be relative to what you believe and act upon in multiple dimensions of life – personal and professional. I want to be transparent about this because it is the holiday season, and I would imagine that many people may be questioning their purpose now.
Professionally, I find great purpose in the mission of Turn (www.turncompost.com), but even more so by the grit and determination of my team. We’ve had setbacks, for certain, but the core of what we are doing with Turn anbd our values – for the environment, our community, our clients, our people…I am confident as Founder and CEO, that Turn is changing the tide for the better in so many ways.
Personally, this has been one of the darker years of my life, going through a divorce, and now I am a single mom and a business owner. I have found purpose and comfort and peace in this season with my biological family, my two children, and a community of friends and colleagues who have been a wonderful support network. I am grateful for all of them! Yet, this one season of my life, though challenging, should not define my general global sense of fulfillment – and my why. I find my purpose during this season in daily gratitude and love for the family and friends in my life – not wasting any time to find joy and peace with them in the moments we have together.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Turn is on a mission to reduce and recycle food waste, and help us rethink and reuse our urban environment for the better. We service residential and commercial clients all over the DFW metroplex. We are a circular model, working with local farms and non-profits to recycle food scraps. If you are interested in our services, please look us up at www.turncompost.com. Also, we are hiring! If you are interested in working for a fast-growing woman-owned environmental services company, please email us at info@turncompost.com
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Listen to other who are wiser and more experienced than you. Be adaptable and ready to change. Work hard, find your inner grit for your vision and to help your people and your mission win.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My parents and grandparents gave me deep roots of character since an early age, particularly in the area of work ethic. As a child, I often hated it, but it made an imprint. My father had (and still has a saying), “do your work quickly, happily, and thoroughly…” This focus on efficiency, attitude and quality has always guided me.
