We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Moquette recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I believe finding your purpose is an evolving process. Each season brings a new purpose, and for me, it has been about using my life experiences to serve others. There is a passage in Scripture that forms the foundation of my mission and ministry:
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”
I give all glory to God for allowing me to say I survived the things I have endured. My experience as a survivor of human sex trafficking fuels the purpose of my non-profit ministry and even my “regular” work as a nail tech and advocate.
Regardless of our differences, we all seek peace, comfort, and relief from the current state of the world. My contribution to society will be transforming the “bad” for good and, hopefully, providing others with the comfort and peace that I find in Jesus.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the founder of a non-profit named Daughters of the Corner. Inspired by my experience, I started this organization to focus on awareness and prevention of human trafficking. Once a “daughter of the corner,” I am now a “daughter of The Cornerstone,” which inspired the name’s double meaning.
Our main program right now is a podcast that allows other survivors to share their stories, giving a voice to often voiceless and marginalized women who identify as sex workers or survivors. We’re looking forward to starting additional programs in the future, including physical outreach in the streets of New York and possibly some writing workshops.
Speaking of writing, I am also the author of a book. I Survived Life as a 304 is an autobiography and Christian self-help book for others experiencing similar hardships. It can be purchased on Amazon or directly from me for a better price.
Last but not least, I recently became a nail technician as another means of outreach for my ministry. Getting my nails done was my favorite thing to do while I was in “The Game,” and it’s a great way to network while also making a living. You can find me on social media @GardenofEdification, @DaughtersofTheCorner, or @NailedforPurpose on Instagram and TikTok.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Doing it afraid, vulnerability, and resilience. I believe all three are essential for success in life. You have to be willing not to give up on yourself or others easily. As a retired people-pleaser and perfectionist, I know how difficult it gets when things don’t work out the way you envision. You have to be able to take what you already have and make use of it before being blessed with more. More often than not, success won’t happen overnight the first time you attempt something. There’s plenty of practice before it becomes the “real deal,” and I believe each of those moments we might call “failure” is actually setting us up for something better than we could have imagined. So don’t give up when it doesn’t work the first, second, or even eleventh time. If you have the passion and faith for it, you can achieve it.
A great scripture for this is Habakkuk 2:2: “Write the vision and make it plain…” There’s more to that scripture, but you get the point. Create a plan for the vision, meditate on it, and follow it. Things will happen, and you might have to redirect the plan, but as long as you have a solid foundation, the rest is up to God.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I literally laughed out loud when I read this—the Bible, hands down. There’s so much wisdom, from managing your business to finding strength when all hell is breaking loose. There is no other book like it.
