We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Mullins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I developed my ability to communicate effectively through a combination of academic training and real-world experience. I earned my degree in Interpersonal Communication from the University of South Florida, where I focused on understanding how people connect, resolve conflict, and build relationships in both personal and professional settings. That foundation gave me the tools to communicate clearly, listen actively, and adapt my message to different audiences.
Career-wise, I’ve had the opportunity to apply those skills in hospitality and sales, where strong communication is essential. Whether I’m leading a client presentation, navigating a partnership, or managing a team, I’ve learned that success often comes down to being able to build trust and express ideas with clarity and confidence.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As the President and Founder of HYPE Tampa Bay, I lead a dynamic organization that brings together hospitality professionals through curated networking events, mentorship opportunities, and community partnerships. What I find most exciting about HYPE is how it creates meaningful connections – whether it’s helping someone land their next job, discover a new venue, or collaborate on a creative project. There’s something truly special about watching those relationships flourish beyond the event itself.
When I started HYPE, the goal was simple: to build a space where hospitality industry professionals could grow, connect, and feel supported. Over the years, it’s evolved into a passionate community that spans hotels, restaurants, event planning, and more. We’re proud to be a go-to resource for local talent and businesses alike.
Right now, we’re especially excited about the launch of our new mentorship program in 2026, designed to connect rising professionals with industry leaders who want to give back. We’re also continuing to expand our event lineup across the region, introducing new venues and experiences each season.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are relationship-building, adaptability, and follow-through.
1. Relationship-building:
In the hospitality and events industry, your network truly is your net worth. Being intentional about forming genuine connections has opened doors I never could have anticipated. My advice: show up, stay curious, and always lead with authenticity. People remember how you make them feel.
2. Adaptability:
Things don’t always go as planned – events shift, clients change their minds, and challenges arise. Being flexible and solution-oriented has helped me navigate those moments with confidence. For those starting out, don’t be afraid of change; instead, see it as an opportunity to grow and get creative.
3. Follow-through:
It’s not enough to just have great ideas -you have to deliver. I’ve built trust by consistently following through on my word, whether it’s confirming a vendor, responding to emails promptly, or showing up early to support a team. For newcomers: develop strong habits, stay organized, and let your actions build your reputation.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! At HYPE Tampa Bay, we’re always looking to partner and collaborate with passionate individuals and businesses who align with our mission of uplifting and connecting the local hospitality community.
We love working with:
Event venues interested in hosting unique, engaging networking events
Hospitality professionals and brands who want to share their expertise or showcase their services
Vendors, sponsors, and creatives who bring value to our events – photographers, DJs, florists, caterers, marketing pros, influencers and more
Community organizations looking to co-host or support giveback initiatives
