Meet Lauren Souter

We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Souter recently and have shared our conversation below.

Lauren, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
For me creativity comes in waves. It’s something that I make time for where I can fit it in my life. I do a lot of family photoshoots, but I still make sure to book some time with other artistic minds to take some really cool and creative photos.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I own a photography business named Ryker Photography. A lot of people don’t know that it is named after my son which he loves! I offer all kinds of photography, and for me the more creative the better! Something you’ll notice about my brand is that I love the use of color and I enhance it as much as I can. I also offer Retouching services where I am able to edit or “spice up” your photos that need a little extra something, or maybe something removed. What I love about this is that the possibilities are endless with editing and I am up for almost any challenge.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Consistency is probably the number one thing that has helped me in this journey so far. My first years photos were not something I was super proud of, but I improved with every photoshoot and every editing session that I did. It’s easy to give up, but it’s more fun to improve and get better! Patience and a thick skin runs right along with that as well. Seeing and comparing the work of others when I was just starting out was not the most fun, but it sure was motivating and you can always learn a lot from others in your field.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
My biggest challenge right now is time. I would love to sit and focus fully on my photography business, but life is also still happening and there are only so many hours in the day to do the fun stuff!
