We recently connected with Laurie Moulton and have shared our conversation below.
Laurie, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My purpose has always been firmly planted in creating a legacy for my family. My childhood experiences played a large role in framing that, watching and listening as my parents worked so hard to provide for my brother and I without a strong foundation or plan for what that meant for our future.
There was a level of uncertainty and desperation, which felt profound, and shaped my thinking and decision making later in life.
I knew at a very young age that building the framework for creating a legacy would give me a clear path in my life, a purpose, and ultimately allow me to create something truly special that I could share with people I adore and love. It would as well allow us a sense of freedom while fostering a deeper connection to one another. Something exceptional happened along my journey of crafting and creating a legacy for my own family: my definition of family evolved in the most incredible way through my experiences working alongside the amazing humans that I have had the pleasure to collaborate with, mentor and learn from. When I think about what a family legacy means to me now, it means creating a family-collective of companies that provide freedom, security, empowerment and pride for the greater good. Everyone that we invite into our family-collective of businesses and therefore into our personal lives, have become family in every sense of the meaning, and that is my true purpose.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
After a 25-year career in the high-tech industry as a finance executive, I left my corporate career behind in pursuit of creating a family-owned collective of companies alongside my husband, Chris Fischer, that would transcend through all facets of home, design, and living. The collective was created to evoke emotion, be a catalyst for inspiration, and provide a sense of comfort with our organically elevated collections.
Creating, designing, crafting, collaborating and curating a collective of businesses is where I thrive. My days comprise of working across a wide range of business practices, with my priorities being Principal designer for our interior design studio, sourcing beautiful pieces from incredible artisans and designers for our retail shops, leading our business strategy as our CEO and being the creative director across our family-owned collective of companies. Our collective is made up of Lolo Interiors, our interior design studio and shop, which is the underpinning of our family collective of businesses, House of Lolo, our retail clothing shop, and Lux Box Agency our real estate sales and rental agency. The collaboration within our businesses has organically grown into a lifestyle brand, bringing both an entrepreneurial essence and luxury hospitality approach allowing us to deeply connect with our clients at one of the most special times of their lives, crafting experiences that they will carry with them always.
I love the notion of always pushing myself, and others, to better understand each other, our clients, our markets and our businesses. I embolden our team to understand, to ask essential questions that will broaden our collective knowledge while listening to the market, the needs of clients, understanding the numbers and key performance indicators all of which allows me to evolve my thoughts on our overall strategy and projections with the goal of providing an exceptional experience for our clients, growth opportunities for our team and a clear path forward.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The leadership qualities that have had the largest impact in my entrepreneurial journey include:
1. Asking the right questions to gain a deeper understanding and broaden the collective knowledge for the business, by creating a culture of transparency, curiosity, freedom to fail and empowering your team to move things forward without you.
2. Know your numbers. Analyzing and understanding your numbers, your market and your key performance indicators provides critical insight into creating a successful path forward, by understanding what’s working, what’s not and where there may be new opportunities to pursue.
3. Finding the right people to join your journey is foundational to the success of any business but even more important than that is your ability as a CEO to create a culture where people feel valued, guided and led toward success.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Year over year, our businesses shift an incredible amount. It’s necessary for us to be flexible and adaptable to new economic conditions, business regulations, and consumer sentiment. At the same time, we must maintain brand integrity and remain grounded in our mission, values, and purpose.
One thing I now know for sure, is that unprecedented times can bring out the best in your team. When things are hard, there’s an opportunity created for people to really flourish under new circumstances. As we’re adapting to meet the current version of our world – we’re choosing purpose over all else, reconnecting with our foundational principles of elevated, beautiful living. Playing off the different strengths of our team members, utilizing our resources in new ways and ultimately getting hyper specific on our why behind every action we take. We lead with purpose, which makes it easy to understand when we’re in alignment, and that allows us to make the best decisions to keep our collective of businesses moving forward. For us, that looked like revisiting our commitment to tailored service, refocusing on our community, relationship building and reflecting internally on what works best for us.
