We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lawyer Bae. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lawyer below.
Hi Lawyer, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I remind myself that I worked hard to get to the position I am in and that I deserve to be in this space. I show up as my authentic self and I don’t let stereotypes put fear into how I show up.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a 31 year old, black, woman, lawyer, mother, & content creator. When I was 5 years old I told my mother that I wanted to be a lawyer and at the age of 25, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with my J.D.
After graduation, I spent 4 years as an Assistant District Attorney prosecuting general felonies. The legal profession took a toll on my mental health and in 2022, I decided to take a step back from lawyering.
I realized that people assume when you have a career, that you still don’t have other issues in life. I started creating content about my everyday life to let others know they aren’t alone in their struggles. A career change after knowing what you wanted to do your whole life is drastic, but it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
I was offered a content creating internship in 2022, I had my first child in 2023, re-entered the legal profession in 2024, & I’ve met countless people through sharing my content who have the same or similar experiences as me.
My content is reflective of my motherhood journey, my journey as a lawyer, black love, mental health, healing, & so much more.
A lot of people ask me for advice on relationships, the legal profession, being a mother and more, so I decided to start a podcast.
The first episode of my podcast “The Big Sister (you never had)” will be released on October 13th, 2024, which is me and my boyfriend’s 3 year anniversary.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Vulnerability, pivoting, & consistency. My ability to be vulnerable allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life. The saying “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” is true. With pivoting, I learned that any skills I have are able to be used in every other area of my life. If something isn’t working for you, pivot. Take those skills you learned and apply them elsewhere. Consistency is probably the most important one. If you’re making content, post every single day even when no one engages with it. If you’re a business owner, keep selling even if you get no purchases. True results take time. Once you get where you want to be, you’ll look back and be thankful you remained consistent.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I write to figure out what is overwhelming me. After identifying why I’m overwhelmed, I make a list of things I need to do. I then do them one by one. Most times we are overwhelmed by too many things happening at once. We have to remember we are human & capable of doing one thing at a time.
