Meet Leah Cox

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leah Cox a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Leah , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Resilience has been a cornerstone of my artistic journey. One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced was navigating through a divorce. It was an incredibly difficult chapter in my life, one that tested my strength and resolve. Yet, amidst the turmoil, I found the courage to rise again. Each day presented a choice: to stay down (some days I did) or to embrace the possibility of new beginnings. That experience taught me the importance of perseverance and the power of creativity as a healing force, reminding me that every setback can spark a resurgence of inspiration.

My parents have played an equally pivotal role in nurturing my resilience. My father, a pastor, along side with my incredible mother has always exemplified unwavering faith and trust in God. His steadfast love and belief in God instilled in me the importance of faith, even in the face of adversity. This foundation has been a guiding light during challenging times.

Additionally, my intrinsic love for creating fuels my spirit. There’s something ineffable about the beauty of the world that ignites a fire within me—whether it’s the vibrant hues of a sunset, the gentle movement of wind through fields, or the just soaking in the view of a beautiful Michigan lake. These moments of beauty compel me to express myself; they awaken something deep inside that is impossible to ignore. Often, I find myself unable to sleep, overwhelmed by the urge to capture my thoughts, goals, and dreams, which spill out in lists and letters scattered throughout my space. I believe this is the essence of a true artist’s heart—a relentless pursuit of creativity that transforms pain into beauty and propels me forward on my journey.

As I reflect on the journey of an artist, I realize that creativity often thrives in the shadows of struggle. Each brushstroke, each photograph, and floral arrangement emerges not only from inspiration but also from the depths of experience—both joyful and painful. My artistic expression serves as a conduit for processing emotions, whether they stem from moments of heartache or the simple wonder found in everyday life. It’s in these contrasts that I find my voice, weaving together the threads of my experiences into a tapestry that resonates with others.

Art has a unique ability to bridge gaps and foster connection. Through my work, I aim to capture those fleeting moments, the raw, the mundane moments that often go unnoticed—the way light dances on water, the delicate curve of a flower petal, or the raw emotion in a fleeting glance. These elements are reminders of the beauty that exists even amid chaos, and they reflect my belief that resilience can be found in the most unexpected places.

Ultimately, my journey as an artist is a testament to the belief that resilience can be transformed into beauty. It is an ongoing exploration, a dance between light and shadow, where every experience—no matter how challenging—adds depth to my work. Through my photos, I strive to inspire others to embrace their own stories, to find strength in vulnerability, and to recognize that, like the most intricate pieces of art, our lives are masterpieces in progress, shaped by every brushstroke of experience we encounter.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My artistic career is intricately woven into the fabric of my life as a mother to two incredible boys, and it’s a journey that continually evolves with each new project I embrace. Like many artists, my home is often a canvas for creativity, where there’s always something happening. Currently, I’m diving into the world of pottery—a new adventure that feeds my love for creating with my hands. I even love to make my sourdough loaves extra pretty with designs on them. Drawing and hand lettering have been lifelong passions; anyone who knew me growing up would find me rarely without a pad and pencil in hand, my imagination running wild with ideas.

One of my dreams has been to own my own shop, I use to venture through our local Cornell’s and just dream of my own shop. I still can’t believe most days that I have my own little flower shop. This space is not just a business for me; it’s a sanctuary where I can fully express my artistic vision and connect with my community. Each day in the flower shop is an opportunity to create something beautiful, whether it’s arranging stunning bouquets or crafting unique floral designs that reflect my artistic sensibility.

Looking ahead, I have a vision for the future that combines all my passions into a singular experience: owning a wedding venue. I envision a space where floral artistry, photography, and events come together in harmony. This venue would not only serve as a backdrop for unforgettable weddings but would also host art classes and community gatherings, nurturing creativity in others. I truly believe that this dream is within reach, and I am committed to making it a reality. Through each step of this journey, I remain dedicated to blending my artistic career with my love for family and community, creating a legacy that inspires both my boys and those around me.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three Impactful Qualities, Skills, or Areas of Knowledge for me:

1. Creativity and Imagination: My ability to think outside the box and approach challenges with a creative mindset has been essential in my journey. Whether it’s coming up with unique floral arrangements, exploring new artistic mediums like pottery, or envisioning my future wedding venue, this quality has allowed me to dream big and turn ideas into reality. Embracing creativity has not only fueled my artistic projects but has also provided a sense of joy and fulfillment in my daily life.

2. Resilience: The capacity to bounce back from setbacks has been a defining quality in my journey as an artist and entrepreneur. Life has presented its share of challenges, from personal struggles to the complexities of running a business. Each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons in perseverance, reminding me that failure is often a stepping stone to success. This resilience has empowered me to keep pushing forward and to view challenges as opportunities for growth and innovation.

3. Staying open to learning and growth. Working, practicing, and studying as much as I could to learn about becoming a photogrpher, a florist, and a businesswoman.

### Advice for Those Early in Their Own Journey:

1. Embrace Your Unique Voice: As you embark on your artistic journey, remember that your perspective is valuable and unique. Don’t be afraid to express yourself authentically. Allow your individuality to shine through your work, and trust that what makes you different is what will resonate with others.

2. Be Open to Learning and Growth: The journey of an artist is one of continuous learning. Embrace every opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge, whether through formal education, workshops, or self-directed exploration. Stay curious and open-minded; each experience can broaden your horizons and enhance your craft.

3. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with a community of fellow creatives and supportive individuals. Networking can lead to collaborations, mentorship opportunities, and valuable feedback. Engage with local art groups, attend workshops, and participate in community events to connect with others who share your passions. Remember, you don’t have to navigate your journey alone; collaboration and support can be incredibly empowering.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

One book that has played a significant role in my development is *The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse* by Charlie Mackesy. It may appear to be a simple read at first glance, but the profound nuggets of wisdom it offers are unparalleled. This beautifully illustrated story resonates deeply with me, capturing the essence of friendship, vulnerability, and the importance of love and kindness.

One of the most impactful messages in the book is the reminder that “It’s okay to be different.” This affirmation encourages us to embrace our uniqueness and not shy away from expressing who we truly are. In a world that often pressures us to conform, this wisdom instills a sense of confidence and acceptance in my artistic journey.

Another poignant lesson is the idea that “What is the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” The answer, “Help,” emphasizes the strength found in vulnerability and asking for support. This has been a crucial reminder in my life as both an artist and a mother; recognizing that reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather an act of courage that fosters connection and growth.

The book also beautifully illustrates the value of being present and appreciating life’s simple moments. Lines like “We don’t know what tomorrow holds” remind me to cherish the now, whether it’s in my creative work or spending time with my boys. It encourages a mindful approach to life, where each moment can be a source of inspiration and beauty.

Ultimately, *The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse* serves as a gentle guide, encouraging readers to embrace their journey with compassion and openness. It has profoundly influenced my perspective, reinforcing the belief that love, friendship, and authenticity are the cornerstones of a fulfilling life and artistic practice.
