We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leah Spencer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leah below.
Leah, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I stumbled upon my purpose through a string of random life choices. I went to a great college to study something I had no true passion or drive for. It was just what you did after high school. Figure out what you might like and continue on through higher education. I moved out to Los Angeles to close out my final semester of college through a special program for film and TV students. When living out there I met a group of creative people who spent their free time making art and music, and expressing themselves in a way I had never experienced. I already knew about wire wraps from the festival scene, but never thought that my life would change after having wire put in my hands my new friends. From there it quickly cascaded into a passion. My true purpose unlocked.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I create one of a kind wire wrapped and metal fabricated jewelry using high quality gems and minerals. I’ve been creating full time for some years now, along-side a part time job at Joy Stember Metal Arts Studio, and a seasonal position playing with the Philadelphia Eagles NFL Drumline. Having two other creative outlets really helps to break up my time with jewelry just enough so that I don’t feel overwhelmed and burnt out. The most fulfilling moments as a small business owner are when people truly see how much care and attention I give each piece. And what goes into bringing it to life. That admiration is more than I could ever ask for.
I also adore making custom creations for clients! I have a vast array of gemstones to choose from. That’s another part of this passion of mine that I absolutely adore. Making something specifically catered to the clients wants and needs. It challenges me in so many ways, and brings about new stages of upward growth and experimentation.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I found that immersing myself in the jewelry community helped a lot. It’s important to surround yourself with knowledgeable people, and have support systems. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Push yourself. Don’t stop. Practice, practice, practice. Try new techniques. Expand and really reach into the unknown.
Find your signature style. The impact of finding my own style and flow, created a brand and identity for my work to be able to stand out.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for collaborators in various mediums! Not just jewelry. I’d love to expand into creating bigger pieces. Interactive, wall displays, etc. I think it would be fun to incorporate wood working! If anyone is interested in collaborating, they can contact me through my website, Instagram, or Facebook page. I’m open to all kinds of creative ideas!
