Meet Lee

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Lee, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?

This may be one of the biggest challenges for an aspiring artist. Within our community, it is common to know individuals that aspire to have a career in hip hop. It’s also common for people to look down on those career aspirations. I’ve dealt with haters, nay-sayers, and doubters for most of my life. Many are some of the closest people in my life (mentors, family members, friends, etc.). When I was much younger, it was difficult to persist through this, and forced me to put my dreams aside and pursue something more “safe.” Now that I have become more stable as an adult and had more life experiences, I focus on what I want despite what haters say. I focus on surrounding myself around positive energy and those that support me and my music career. This helps me develop my confidence and gives me the drive to keep going. Now I pay little attention to nay-sayers.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Lee is an independent hip hop artist, born and raised in Columbus, OH, and currently living Charlotte, NC. He has developed a sound based on his midwestern roots and current southern influences. Lee’s music has a focus of telling stories from various points of views about several subjects, and uses witty lyrics to bring them to life.

Thus far, Lee has released 2 EPs, The Project Pt. 1 & 2, and a new album, You Got McDonalds Money. Some of his top songs are “Temptation,” “10 a.m. on Morse,” “Push Button Started,” and “Ma, I Caught A Body.”

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Through my journey, I have learned a lot about myself and how to create impactful music. The skills/qualities that have had the greatest influence to my journey is understanding the imporatnace of being in uncomfortable situations and being genuine.

When you put yourself in uncomfortable situations, you usually come out of them with a new skill or awareness of how you could improve as an artist. For me personally, performing live was very uncomfortable for me. I am naturally an introvert and very chill. It was difficult for me to translate that on a stage, while also keeping the crowd engaged. Fortunately, I was willing to put myself in that uncomfortable situation several times to enhance my skills as a performer. Now I am much more comfortable on stage and know how to engage with the crowd, while still being myself.

I think being a genuine artist is critical for people aspiring to create impactful music. The songs that stand the test of time and touch millions of peope are usually very honest, and pull from life experiences. It is hard to do this if you attempt to make songs about topics you’ve never been through. Most of the time listeners can tell when you lack authenticity. When you are yourself and talk about what you know, it will resonate with the listeners much better.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am always open to collaborating. Now that I have released my first independent album, I am looking to collaborate with more producers on singles & EPs. I ususally work with boom-bap beats, but I am also interested in working with different sounds.

In addition, I am always open to feature on others artist’s songs. If you are interested in working with me, please reach out to my team via email, [email protected], or DM me on instagram, @lee___music.
