Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lee Moretti. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lee, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
The music industry is an environment that constantly challenges one’s sense of identity, self-esteem, and determination. I think many of us performers, writers, entrepreneurs et al do end up finding our people, but the process of facing failure is an ever-present one. I could say something hollow like “we all just have to believe in ourselves” but the fact is, true belief comes from a combination of multiple leaps of faith, determination, and constantly facing your fears.
I have become resilient because my sense of self, my skills, and my dreams have always been tested. I’ve been met with challenge after challenge and sometimes I’ve failed. But the point is – once you’re met with resistance what are you going to do? Turn tail and run? I would hope not. I would argue that resilience isn’t something that’s naturally developed – it’s the will for survival, the ultimate decision that you will not quit. And if you’re not going to quit, what other option is there than to be resilient in the face of adversity? Whether that’s about art, fiscal success, personal health, or anything else – the answer is the same.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have been a musician for most of my life, and a proud multi-hyphenate at that. As a guitarist primarily, I developed my voice through writing, performing, and touring. One of my biggest steps at the beginning of my career was as the touring multi-instrumentalist for Third Eye Blind. But now, whether I’m touring and writing with my band The Furies, touring with an artist, playing on Broadway, co-writing in the studio, music directing, or putting my two cents in with the company I co-own, Harbinger Entertainment, I see all around me the ways to contribute not just to music in general but to our cultural capacity as human beings. We create our legacy with every step forward – being as intentional as I can be with that is my highest priority.
I’m particularly excited that this year my band The Furies will be coming out with our next album. One single, “Between the Lines” was released a few months ago and the next, “Send it Away,” will be out this summer. The Furies as a community of musicians and a collaborative experience has and continues to be what I consider my life’s work in the making. I feel tremendously blessed to share my life musically with these insanely gifted women. Conceptually this band started as an embodiment for the Greek goddesses of vengeance, but over time has manifested more through the lens of their representation as truth-seekers. This is a group that believes in authenticity above all, and I’m very proud of us for that.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, compassion, and grit are definitely the qualities that I believe have helped me immensely. The music industry deals in a lot of uncertainty, instability, and last minute changes. Compassion for others, resilience in the fact of obstacles, and persisting no matter what are the foundational skills that can weather those factors while staying yourself.
I would say that taking care of yourself and prioritizing your health and wellness are the best ways to practice these skills. It’s a lot harder to be resilient or giving to others, or to maintain endurance if you don’t have the energy or stability to do so.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Slow down, eat well, get more sleep, talk to someone. Leaning on others is essential, and taking breaks when feeling overburdened is one of the most important things you could do for yourself.
