We were lucky to catch up with Lee Swann recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lee , sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I’ll start by saying therapy helped a lot in putting me on the right path. I’ve had depression and anxiety since I was in high school. And when I was almost mid-twenties, I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Honestly, I still think they’re missing the “C” at the beginning of PTSD for “complex” which has been associated with people who experience trauma in their childhood. After this diagnosis stemming from a summer of breakdowns and the peak of COVID-19, the therapist I had at the time suggested I do a healing project for myself while on leave. There began my first podcast journey and a continuation of my writing aspirations to produce my first poetry book. Fast forward five years later, and almost ten years into my career, I’ve recently released a timeless daily reflection journal (timeless because there are no dates, so no pressure and no guilt if you don’t pick it back up every day) and I’m soon to release my next book. I’ve been able to transform my mental health struggles into triumphs and my real life situational experiences into a self help novel titled Authenticity Insurance. I do my best to maintain through regular self-care but the most exciting, fulfilling, and truly healing moments on my journey are the contributions to the world by being a motivator and leader to my employees and those outside work to be the best version of themselves in order to have positive and meaningful impact in their endeavors.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m just a writer and woman of the arts following my entrepreneurial instincts. My father always said you will never feel like you’re working when you are doing what you love. I created the online self-help platform of LoveAuthenticallee (Instagram: @LoveAuthenticallee; www.loveauthenticallee.org) with the intent to help people balance their life with career or entrepreneurial aspirations by building their inner person for the best version of themselves to always be present. I do this in three parts, 1) my daily self reflection journal The Authentic Leader Journal, 2) my upcoming self help and development novel Authenticity Insurance, and 3) webinars and workshops based on my two book offerings. What’s special is we are challenging the norms of people having to stay the same whether in their real life or career and hoping to motivate people to be brave and choose the path that allows all of their strengths to shine. In its totality, the LoveAuthenticallee brand is a holistic self-help guide.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience. Adaptability. Observant.
Being resilient makes you stronger with every test you fail or thing that doesn’t go your way.
Adaptability makes you amenable to the change around you without breaking or unable to keep up.
Being observant allows you to take in all the necessary details to make informed moves or decisions.
For anyone starting out or wanting to develop, put yourselves in uncomfortable situations to test your resilience, adaptability, and ability to observe without acting right away because you will experience real growth when you get out of your comfort zone.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is anyone willing to do the work on themselves. There is one thing to complain but it is another to not act. If you are wanting to truly transform and really looking to move into a better version of you, you cannot be afraid, disingenuous, or unintentional about it. You have to mean it and take yourself seriously first before you try to ask for help.
