We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful LEEAN BROWN. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with LEEAN below.
Hi LEEAN, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I would definitely say my resilience comes from my faith in God. In my forty plus years of life, I’ve faced various challenges, from failed relationships to health issues. Through it all I found that God remained the only constant when everything else was changing. I grew up in a Christian family and most of us are still Christians today. I believe my godfather, George McGhie, now deceased, helped to deepen my faith in God. He was a lay-preacher in our local Anglican church, always reading faith-based books, and encouraged me in the discipline of fasting from a very early age.
In my early twenties, I discovered a lump in my right breast. My prayer life was deepened as I sought the LORD for healing. Luckily for me, after several doctor’s visits and one biopsy, it was fibroadenoma. There were times when my faith in God wavered as I walked the path of worldly pleasures, but I am grateful that God never forsook me.
Although I was at times wayward, I found that God had a way of protecting me that I would never go too far. This made me more resilient in ensuring that I walked the path He had already chosen for me. In the moments when I felt lost or lonely, I found that God always gave me words of inspiration and I would pen them as songs or poems. This made me even more determined to stand my ground in faith.
In 2016, six years after getting married and trying to conceive, I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. I was adamant that God would have to heal me because He did not create me with fibroids. I started declaring healing scriptures and sought natural remedies because I was determined not to undergo surgery. In 2021, after seeking the LORD one night in tearful prayer, I received confirmation in Jeremiah 30: 17 ‘For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.’ KJV.
This was the word I needed to boost my confidence to finally undergo surgery.
Considering the fact that my husband and I were yet to start a family, I was initially very concerned but after receiving this confirmation in God’s word I decided it was time to release any doubts or fears and fully surrender everything to God.
Surgery was scheduled for August but there was a spike in Covid 19 cases so it was postponed. God’s timing is always perfect because when the blood tests were done in July for me to undergo surgery in August, the results showed my hemoglobin level was 6.5. This was half the normal level and I would require blood transfusion if the surgery was to be done at that time.
Fast forward to November 2021. After changing my diet to increase my hemoglobin, another blood test was done, and my hemoglobin was now 9.5. I did a myomectomy, which is a procedure done to remove fibroids but keep the womb intact. The myomectomy was successful, and twelve fibroids were removed.
Although my husband and I are still waiting to start our family, I am determined to trust God because He kept me sane when I could have gone into depression. It is not always easy to deal with health issues and especially for women, fertility issues so it requires resilience and deep faith. From this journey my first book, Forty & Free – A Journey of Faith and Healing was birthed. It is now being revised and will be available on Amazon and other online platforms mid-August. I am in the process of completing two devotionals and a book of poetry. You may ask why I write or when I find the time to write. I write very often and sometimes even during my lunch break. I have a collection of written work to be edited and published so look out for more from Leean N. Brown or LBInspirations.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I recently started blogging on WordPress and sharing posts on my social media handles. However, some setbacks with a career transition brought a pause to my posts but my goal is to start posting in the new week. My first book, Forty & Free – A Journey of Faith and Healing is being revised and will be available on Amazon and other online platforms mid-August. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Faith – My faith helps me stay positive, be resilient and optimistic. Obstacles may arise on our path to financial freedom, healing, finding a job etc., but we need to remember we can always choose another path to reach our destination. I am constantly in the Word and prayer because there are times when everything else seems dim, but when I seek the Lord, I receive a word to help me move forward, sometimes the answer comes immediately and sometimes I have to wait, but the answer always comes.
Support – Whatever challenge we face in life we all need support from others. My first point of contact is Almighty God. Next my husband, our relatives, friends and church family. Although it may be daunting, it is important to express our feelings, fears and frustrations to others, so we don’t suffer in silence and get the help we need before it is too late.
Self-Love – I would encourage anyone who is in their waiting season, be it a career transition, health issue, marriage, divorce, etc., to love yourself in spite of what others may say. Remember you are not defined by what others say but by God, who created you for His purpose. Engage in activities that bring joy, relaxation and peace. Reduce stress and improve your mental and emotional health because according to Ralph Waldo, ‘the first wealth is health’.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The challenge I am facing now is that I sometimes feel stuck, and this causes inconsistency in my visibility. There are times when I am always showing up for my brand, but there are times when life happens, and my consistency is affected.
I have accountability partners, persons who check on my progress. But I have also decided that my community needs me to show up regardless of what is happening, so I need to show up for them.
