Meet Leigh Ann Van Fossan

We were lucky to catch up with Leigh Ann Van Fossan recently and have shared our conversation below.

Leigh Ann , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

Being an artist who loves to paint landscapes, my creativity is kept alive simply by spending time appreciating my natural surroundings. I love to hike, explore, take walks. I love to go out driving at sunrise or sunset, just to capture the scenes that I’d like to paint. Nature is endless fuel for my creativity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have been a professional artist since 2014, and the art world has changed immensely within that short timeframe. My hope in this ever changing art world, is to remain true to who I am as an artist, and to what I love to paint. I specialize in oil painting – but I also venture out into acrylics or watercolor, depending on the project. My main body of work can best be described as impressionistic landscape paintings, but I have been known to play with abstract as well. I love meeting new collectors, and working with designers. I paint both miniature and extra large… and I am always open to discussing special commissions for both private and public spaces. My husband is also an internationally-collected artist, and we have just released our first joint website – a sort of online gallery of our collective work: www.vfgallery.com

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Studying Other Artists
Art school is great. But I’ve learned the most from studying the work of other artists I love. Some of my favorites are Claude Monet and Henri Matisse.

2. “Let it go!” At least within MY style/technique of painting, perfectionism can be an unwanted intruder and an unworthy distraction. Sometimes, you just have to let the paint do what it wants to do.

3. Maintain strong relationships with your Collectors. Our collectors keep us going… and many of them become dear friends as the years go by.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am looking for designers! I would love to do some large commissioned works for special spaces… and I am quite versatile in what I offer in painting style/ability. I have really enjoyed doing site-specific work, and hope to find more of these opportunities.
