Meet Leiky Oscar

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leiky Oscar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Leiky, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I developed my resilience from my immigrant mother. She came to this country 35 years ago. Did hard labor without complaining to provide for my brothers and I.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have been doing hair and bringing smiles to my faithful clients for about 25 years. My focus is growing healthy natural hair while also empowering my clients to embrace their natural curls, also eduacting them on how to maintain the hair healthy weather you like to have it pressed out or out curly. The most exciting thing to me is seeing my clients smiles when they see their transformations. I am known for doing a silk press for an hour or less.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back I am grateful for my Dominican roots. They all believe they’re hair stylist because we learn at a early age to blow dry hair. It helped me to learn to manage my 3-4 different textures in my head due to the strong mixture of African and European. Allowing me to understand the different products that work for different textures to better treat my clients.
The only advice I can give to new stylist is to stay passionate about what they do. The more you love what you do the more creative you become.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

The last 5 years of my life have been the most difficult. I lost mom to cancer, a close friend committed suicide, got divorced, pandemic, and almost got evicted. But, God! The resilience and faith in God I learned from my mother kept me pushing through. I understand now that being a hair stylist is my ministry/ purpose in life. I have been able uplift and poured hope into so many of my clients because I can identify with them in so many areas and struggles we face in life. So, GRATITUDE is my biggest improvement.
