Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lenka Padysakova. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lenka, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
It is inside me since I was a small girl. My mom used to tell me that I always wanted to do my homework alone, didn’t want anyone to help me. She never had to ask me or force me to do my school homework. I had the responsibility understanding in me since an early age . And she could rely on me and trust me that I will have it done. And not only done, but done well.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Costume and Fashion designer. I studied historical costume design and scenography, art and fashion design, drawing, pattern making and sewing.
I was sewing my own designs since I was 12 years old. I had my first clients I created designs for while still studying Fashion Design in Slovakia.
My first company I worked for as a Fashion designer was brand Karl Kratochwil in Berlin immediately after my secondary school. After one year in Berlin I moved to London where I graduated from University of The Arts London. There I also did internship at Vivienne Westwood studio where I learned secrets of Vievienne’s pattern cutting.
I relocated to Rome for one year where I was creating costumes for wonderful production called MICCA CLUB.
My costume design work for short films include “Corvidae” starring Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones, the acclaimed short film “Wonderful, Terrible Thing” which had its premiere at Cannes film festival in 2011. The documentary “The Magdalenes” which won an award as a best Learning On Screen film in 2014. I worked as a costume designer on numerous feature films such as “Vendetta”starring Danny Dyer, Vincent Regan, Alistair Petrie, Josef Altin, “The Crypt” which has been chosen as an official selection at the Laughlin International Film Festival in the US in October 2014, “Top Dog” which won awards as a best independent feature film, best director, best actor and best supporting actor at British Independent Film Festival 2014, “We Still Kill The Old Way” with excellent James Cosmo, Steven Berkoff, Ian Ogilvy, Alison Doody, “Age of Kill” with stars like Martin Kemp, Dexter Fletcher, Bruce Payne, Phil Davis, “Rise of the Footsoldier: part II ” with Luke Mably, Charlie Heaton, Ricci Harnett, “The Ritual killer” directed by George Gallo and staring Morgan Freeman, Cole Hauser, Vernon Davis, Peter Stormare, Brian Kurlander.
I worked on prestigious theatrical productions at The Royal Opera House, Peacock Theatre, The Young Vic Theatre, Teatro Palladium and Teatro Olimpico whilst living in Rome.
From tv commercials world just to name few: Chevrolet, Parliament (Philip Morris), Harvey Nichols, Acadia, The Masked Singer Scoob.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Communication skills are very important in my type of work. As creating movies is all about communicating with writers, directors, producers, actors… I keep saying that I am not only a Costume Designer but also a psychotherapist 😉 Having initiative and being reliable.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is a person who trust me. Who believe that I am able and capable to do what I do best.
