Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leo Key. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Leo Key with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
As a young boy I would run errands, and do chores for neighbors. I had a very strong desire to earn, and achieve for myself. When it was discovered by my parents, their support was a major influence in my growth. I did yard work managed a news paper route. My early teen years had promise due to both my parents multi-skilled abilities. I worked after school retail jobs to earn extra money.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My Name is Leo Key: Artist/Producer/Engineer/Instructor (Guitarist/Vocalist)
I’ve worked with Motown Records, MCA Records, Death Row Records, Ray Chu of “Saturday Night at the Apollo”, “Chuck Rainey”, “George Clinton”, “The Patrice Rushen Band”, Cedric Martin of “Confunkshun”, Thomas McClary of “The Commodores”, Louis Johnson of “The Brothers Johnson”, and many more.
I was influenced at an early age by R&B, Gospel, Soul, Rock, Funk, Jazz, and Country.
Music has been a love driven passion with me from an early age. In my early 20’s, I was given the opportunity to tour, experiment, grow, and learn how the music industry work . Through many years of performing live, working with Producers in recording sessions was a huge help to open doors. One main thing I quickly learned, you must develop in multiple areas to survive in the business.
My focus and brand, K.P.S. is geared to create the best music possible. Proving the education to ones that follow the same path. I like working with players, their instruments, and that natural talent. When these elements are combined with todays music technology, the possibilities are unlimited as to what you can create.
Productions:
I’ve been a P&E member for seven years with the Recording Academy.
My operations offer competitive high end post production, radio spots, voice overs, audio books and more.
Education:
I offer course curriculums that covers Music Production/Engineering, Voice Training, Guitar, and Song Writing.
With years of working with Educational Institutes, non profit and programs for at risk youth, my students receive the best support to build self esteem, confidence, and character.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
SecurePatience, Determination, and Persistence
My advise is to never ever give up on your dreams. There will be stormy weather, and rough roads on your journey. I truly feel if you stay true to your self, you will be just fine.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My Father supported my interest in the guitar, he played harmonica, (not professionally) and had a brother I never knew that played the guitar. My Mom was opposed of my choosing to learn and play the guitar. But later years did help with her support. It was fulfilling to have her on board.
