We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leo Romero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leo, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Honestly, I’m still on a journey to fully overcoming imposter syndrome. One of the key steps I’ve taken is to stop comparing myself to other artists. It’s easy to get caught up in the success and talents of those around me, but I’ve realized that I need to focus on my own path. Embracing the idea that I’m in my own lane has been crucial. Recognizing and valuing my unique contributions helps me stay grounded and more confident in my work.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m LEYO (Leo), a 22-year-old Latinx queer artist making waves in the pop music scene with my unique blend of R&B influences, clever lyrics, and alternative sounds. My journey began three years ago as a ghostwriter, where my talent quickly caught the attention of industry heavyweights, leading to a coveted publishing deal with Sony Music Group.
I’m currently working on my debut EP, titled *Boys Just Want to Have Fun*. The EP is a journey through a boy’s pursuit of fun while I’m caught up in wanting just them. My first single off the project will be available on September 30th, with the full EP releasing on October 18th. With my own voice and vision now at the forefront, I’m carving out a distinctive space in the music world, offering a fresh perspective that’s as authentic as it is innovative.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say resilience, passion, and consistency were the most impactful qualities in my journey. Resilience helped me overcome challenges, passion drove my creativity, and consistency kept me committed to my projects. For those early in their journey, focus on practicing discipline and let your passion fuel you. Embrace setbacks as learning experiences to build resilience and maintain a consistent routine to keep progressing.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Currently, I’m navigating the challenge of loving myself, my art, and accepting my own skin. I’m still quite shy and dealing with anxiety, which makes the vulnerability of sharing my work particularly tough. Creating art puts me in a position where I expose my deepest feelings, and while this process is crucial for me, it also triggers my anxieties. I’m learning that it’s okay to be vulnerable and that not everyone will resonate with my work. The goal is to embrace this vulnerability, knowing that those who connect with my art will truly feel the passion behind it.
