We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leslie Bennett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
Running a business is amazing but also exhausting. That’s why I really try to set aside time to unplug. Hiking, exploring new places, or just being out in nature gives me the reset I need. I have a hard time stepping away from the phone, emails, and notifications, so taking the time to do something for me and ignore everything else is really important.
As business owners, we’re constantly ‘on,’ – making decisions, solving problems, and juggling a million things. Taking time to disconnect isn’t a luxury, it’s necessary. Every time I step away, the goal is to come back better.
So if you’re feeling burned out, do yourself (and your business) a favor – step outside, take a deep breath, and turn the phone off for a bit. All the problems will still be there when you get back.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Co-Owner of Digital Pulse Consulting, a full-service marketing agency. We handle social media management, content creation, ads, newsletters, strategy, blogs, consulting, and more. But honestly, what makes us different is we like to get involved.
We actually get out from behind the screen and show up for our clients. We love getting behind-the-scenes content, brainstorming fun campaign ideas, or just making sure their brand actually feels like them. We love being hands-on. And if our clients let us, we like to have fun with their content – because people don’t engage with boring posts.
We’re working on some things for small business owners who need help with social media but don’t have the budget for full-time management. So if that sounds like you, give us a follow. We’ve got some good stuff coming soon!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three things that had the biggest impact on my journey were my sales & marketing experience, social media education, and my time in the corporate world.
Sales and marketing taught my business partner, Chris, and me how to sell and connect with an audience. These are skills that easily transfer to digital marketing. But social media isn’t just traditional marketing on a new platform, it’s different. Taking social media courses helped us understand how to use it strategically for business, which was a game-changer. My time as an Operations Manager in the corporate world showed me the importance of customer service, networking, and juggling 1,000 things at once.
For anyone just starting out, my biggest advice is to stop waiting for the perfect time. Stop overthinking. Just start. You can’t improve on something that hasn’t been started yet.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
I would say our biggest challenge is finding time to market ourselves. As business owners, there’s always something happening behind the scenes – taxes, paperwork, our own content creation… and when client work takes priority (which it always does), our own brand can end up on the back burner.
If we don’t make time for our business, no one else will, so we’re trying to set aside dedicated time to focus solely on Digital Pulse. We’ve also learned that stepping away and doing things like traveling, hiking, or just unplugging is just as important. Taking time to recharge helps us come back sharper, more creative, and ready to grow.
