Meet Leslie Gutierrez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leslie Gutierrez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leslie below.

Hi Leslie , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

I developed my ability to take risks while working in a competitive commission-based position at Saks Fifth Avenue. In that environment, success depended on being proactive, so I learned to take the initiative with client outreach and marketing. I discovered that by offering a personalized, upscale experience, I could build strong client relationships—many of my clients would come in for makeup services and purchase over $250 in products because of the experience I created for them.

Seeing that success, I decided to take a bigger risk by offering makeup services outside of the store. What started as a small side opportunity eventually grew into a full-time business. That experience taught me that taking thoughtful, calculated risks—especially when you believe in your skills and provide value—can lead to major growth and new opportunities.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m a prestige makeup and hair stylist, and the most rewarding part of what I do is seeing my clients’ confidence grow right before my eyes. There’s something so special about the moment they look in the mirror and see the best version of themselves—it reminds me why I love this career.

My work doesn’t stop at makeup and hair; I also help clients style their outfits to complete the look. It’s a creative process from start to finish, and I love it because my clients become my canvas—I get to bring their vision to life.

One of the most exciting parts of my journey has been the doors this career has opened. What started as volunteer work at New York Fashion Week turned into incredible opportunities. Through networking and hard work, I was offered a Makeup Lead position for a production, in Paris France which included paid travel and compensation. That experience led me to Milan Fashion Week, and next year, it looks like I’ll be heading to Dubai Fashion Week—something I’m beyond excited about!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are confidence, persistence, and creativity.

Confidence was key—believing in my talent and knowing my worth helped me stand out in such a competitive industry. There will always be moments of doubt, but trusting yourself and your craft makes all the difference.

Persistence kept me going when things didn’t happen right away. I learned that every “no” just gets you closer to the right “yes.” Taking risks and staying consistent—especially when it’s uncomfortable—is what creates real growth.

And creativity is what keeps my passion alive. It’s not just about makeup or hair; it’s about storytelling, expression, and helping people feel their best.

My advice to anyone starting out is: take the risk. Be “delusional” enough to believe in yourself when others don’t. Post your work, show up confidently, and never let anyone make you feel small. The right opportunities will always find you when you stay true to your vision.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I start to feel overwhelmed, I focus on staying grounded and reminding myself that everything eventually works itself out. I’ve learned not to pour too much energy into things I can’t control, because that only takes away from my positive energy.

Instead, I take a step back, breathe, and refocus on the things that bring me peace—like journaling, spending time alone to recharge, or listening to music. Staying positive and keeping that calm mindset helps me move through challenges with more clarity and balance.

My advice for anyone feeling overwhelmed is to give yourself grace. Take a break when you need to, trust that things will align in time, and protect your peace—your energy is your greatest tool.
