We recently connected with Leticia Castillo and have shared our conversation below.
Leticia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I believe that everyone has a unique voice that deserves to be heard, and I have found my purpose in using music therapy to ensure that voice can shine, especially for neurodiverse individuals. Through my work, I strive to create a safe, welcoming environment where music becomes a bridge, connecting people and transcending differences. I am continually inspired by the profound impact that I see in our music therapy sessions—helping individuals to express themselves, improve their emotional and social skills, and feel valued in their community. Every day, I am committed to making music therapy accessible and relevant, ensuring that no one feels left out but empowered and included.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My goal is to spread the word about music therapy and help people feel empowered and included through musical experiences.
We work with people of all ages. From babies to older adults in assisted living facilities and memory care. I see in my day-to-day the power that music has to connect people and help in so many other areas, like communication, sensory and emotional regulation, cognition, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and more.
While we provide one-on-one work with our clients, I am excited to begin offering group classes and sessions this year.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe that perseverance, empathy, and hard work have been the the three most important qualities of my journey. Perseverance has allowed me to remain steadfast in the face of challenges and has helped me push forward when obstacles arise (which happens frequently).
Empathy has been crucial in understanding and connecting with others, both clients and our team members. I strive to not just providing a supportive environment for our families but also for our team of admins and therapists.
Lastly, hard work has been indispensable; creating supportive space for people who may not always be supportive is difficult. There are challenges when it comes to advocacy and funding. Hard work has helped drive my commitment and continue to work towards our goals.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am actively seeking to partner and collaborate with individuals and organizations who share my dedication to supporting neurodiverse people, ensuring they feel supported, heard, and not alone. If you possess a passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of others and believe in the power of collaboration, I would be thrilled to hear from you. Together, we can explore ways to bring music therapy to the community either in groups or one-on-one. The goal is to enhance the wellbeing of neurodiverse individuals and create environments where everyone feels valued and included.
