Meet LEWIS KIM

We recently connected with LEWIS KIM and have shared our conversation below.

LEWIS, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

I’m Lewis, a photographer based in Arizona, and I specialize in fashion, weddings, and family portraits. Since my work is all about people, I focus on capturing their unique personality and emotion in an authentic way.
To stay inspired, I visit exhibitions and study the work of other artists to broaden my visual language. I also take intentional walks without my camera to reconnect with the beauty of nature and let my mind rest and wander.
Most importantly, prayer and quiet reflection are what truly renew my creativity. In those moments, I draw from the infinite creativity of God, the Creator. I try to see each person through His eyes—valuing their uniqueness and the story they carry.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I work as a photographer at some of Arizona’s most renowned fashion weeks, including Arizona Fashion Week, and Scottsdale Fashion Week. I also specialize in branding photography for various businesses. In addition, I capture the natural and beautiful moments of families, preserving their unique stories.

I offer both wedding photography and videography, and in 2023, I had the honor of being named the Best Wedding Photographer in Glendale, Arizona. I focus on capturing the fleeting, beautiful moments that clients may not have noticed, carefully preserving them through my lens. By doing so, I gift my clients stunning photos and beautiful memories to cherish for a lifetime.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that had the most impact on my journey are my family, the experience of growing up in South Korea, and the artistic inspiration I gained from fashion weeks and exhibitions.

First, my loving wife and three adorable children have been a great source of inspiration for me. Seeing the preciousness and natural beauty of my own family has helped me when capturing family portraits for my clients. I believe that understanding and appreciating family is a fundamental part of my work, and it allows me to create authentic and meaningful photos.

Second, growing up in South Korea played a significant role in shaping my photography. South Korea has a highly developed fashion photography scene, and from a young age, I was exposed to the nuances of fashion. This cultural background greatly influenced my style, helping me bring creative and diverse perspectives to my work with clients.

Third, participating in fashion weeks and visiting exhibitions have expanded my artistic boundaries. By exploring the works of other artists, I gained new perspectives and developed my own style. These artistic experiences have inspired my photography and encouraged me to think creatively beyond the lens.

My advice to those early in their journey would be: First, build connections with your family and loved ones to understand their genuine beauty, and practice capturing those moments. Second, explore different cultures and artistic backgrounds to broaden your senses and understanding. Finally, seek out artistic experiences like exhibitions and fashion weeks to gain visual inspiration and study the work of other artists. These experiences will help you develop and refine your craft.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The greatest influence my parents had on me was their abundant love and their artistic sensibility. Being the firstborn, I grew up surrounded by their affection and care. My father was a pastor at a local church in South Korea, and he was also incredibly talented in the arts. He played the piano beautifully, painted well, and was an excellent photographer. As a result, I have many childhood photos of my younger siblings and me taken by him. When I was in elementary school, my father gave me a film camera for my birthday, and that’s when I first started exploring photography. I believe the reason I became a photographer today is because I inherited both my parents’ devoted love and their artistic talents. Their influence has shaped who I am and what I do.
