We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lexi Norton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lexi, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I honestly have had the drive ever since I was a kid. If anyone told me I couldn’t do something, it made me want to do it more. But I also learned to ground myself and not just push myself to do things just to please other people. I finally think I’ve found a good happy medium in my life and I am so proud of everything I have done. To move out at 16, flying to different states for different dance opportunities, and just risking it all. I’ve learned that you only live once, so do what you love, and with no regrets.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I grew up dancing all the time. My mom supported it ever since I was a kid and would always put me in different dance classes growing up. For some reason hip hop stuck. It was my best form of expression, and at the start of 10 years old I wanted to compete. I ended up being in a couple different amazing dance teams and I learned so much from those experiences. After dance teams like Supremacy Dance Fam and Origination, I ended up moving to LA. I used to drive up from San Diego to Los Angeles up to three times a week just to take a dance class. When I made the move I was so young and barley knew anyone. I’ve grown so much in the past three years and I’m so grateful to have this opportunity. I’m currently still taking classes as often as I can, working full time, pursuing college, modeling, and even making music.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learning to be okay in my own self and be by myself was the biggest challenge. I used to always depend on people to come with me to places and help me put myself out there, but I realized if you don’t believe in yourself and expand your horizons, you could miss out on so much. Lastly I would say confidence and connecting with people were the most impactful throughout my journey. I’ve met so many like-minded people and have learned so much.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I honestly don’t have one exact person I would love to collaborate with, but I would love to just start choreographing more and focus on building off other people’s energy. I would also love to go on tour sometime as a backup dancer and that has been a long-lasting goal of mine.
