We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leya Lowery. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leya below.
Leya, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Growing up my mom had a lot of friends whom all came from different backgrounds as did I. I got to see and be around so many different people with different types of personalities, style, and beliefs. I believe that this helped shape me into who I am today and taught me that it doesn’t matter what you look like, what matters is how you treat the people around you. I understand that I am not for everyone. I have tattoos and piercings which I know are considered unprofessional but I don’t let that get in my head. No matter what the situation is anyone I meet I treat with respect, kindness, and show everyone loyalty. I make sure my customer service is top tier because I know my “looks” can turn some people off. I have been told by several people that they didn’t want to do business with me at first until they met me and realized that I am one of the nicest people they have met or done business with. I believe keeping a happy and kind mindset has helped me succeed especially in a room where I am the only one that looks like me. You aren’t made to be for everyone so you should never let that stop you from expressing yourself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hey ya’ll, my name is Leya, I am the owner of Cowgirls + Hippies Boutique. I was born and raised in South Carolina. Small town living, true southern hospitality, good vibes, positivity, and self-love is what I am all about. See how I came up with the name! I was 20 years old and had a dream of how I could help women feel good, look good and not break the bank. Cowgirls + Hippies is an online / pop up boutique that’s number one goal is to promote body positivity and affordability. We know that not all women are a size small and looking gorgeous on a budget is what we do best! We offer quality clothes at affordable prices for women of all body types. We are here to make sure our customer is satisfied and a customer for life!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Kindness, Organization, and Motivation are the top three qualities / skills that I believe were my most impactful. I know this doesn’t work for everyone but I made a vision board to look at everyday of my journey to continuously show myself where I want this business to be in 10 years. I also am a big believer of manifestation. I believe speaking things into existence and then you will make those things come true or happen!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Personally when I am overwhelmed I do one of two things. Take a walk and get my mind off of the things stressing me out or sit in a quiet dark room and meditate. While meditating I invision my goals being a reality and remind myself why I am working so hard and why this will all be worth it in the end!
